Thiago's father says he'd like Liverpool star to leave Reds for former club

Thiago's father, Mazinho, wants to see his son join up with Celta Vigo amid uncertainty around his Liverpool future.

The Reds have seen a mass midfield overhaul this summer with Thiago one of the few members who remains at Anfield. The Spaniard, who joined in 2020 from Bayern Munich, has a year left on his deal and already there is talk of the Reds allowing him to leave in 12 months' time.

Thiago has played for the likes of Barcelona earlier in his career and remains a classy performer. A switch to Celta Vigo would come as a surprise but his father, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1994, wants to see the 32-year-old head to Spain, where his brother has spent two seasons and also played back in the day.

He told Mundo Deportivo: "In football, you never know, I hope so but at the moment it is very complicated because Thiago has another dimension and another lifestyle. But I wish Thiago could come here."

Mazinho also added: "Almost all the memories I have from here are very good. Vigo is our home, Rafa has had the opportunity to come here later to play two seasons, for the whole family, Celta means our home."

Last term Celta Vigo finished 13th in LaLiga and are by no means a sleeping giant. Never have they won Spain's top flight nor have they claimed the Copa del Rey, finishing as runners-up on three occasions, with former Liverpool man Iago Aspas their leading light.

Thiago has copped criticism during his time at Anfield, particularly for slowing down their rhythm with the Spaniard excelling in possession-based teams whilst Liverpool have looked at their best when counter-attacking under Jurgen Klopp.

At the start of the summer Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner were all moved on by the club, who decided not to renew their contracts. Since then captain Jordan Henderson and Brazilian Fabinho have both been sold to clubs in Saudi Arabia, leaving the club light in the middle of the park.

Alexis Mac Allister was an early signing with Dominik Szoboszlai soon following from RB Leipzig. Liverpool have also captured a defensive-minded player in Wataru Endo from Stuttgart as Klopp looks to sure up his midfield with more business still on the cards for the Reds.
