Dozens more flights have been cancelled today as chaos caused by air traffic control issues rumbles on for a third day.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports are worst affected today as airlines, particularly British Airways, work to get their planes and crews in the right place. Because of limits on the number of hours pilots and crews can wait for a flight to depart, many could not work services when they eventually flew and so are also in the wrong locations.

Major flight disruption which has left many holidaymakers stranded overseas was caused by a problem with inbound data, air traffic control bosses have said. National Air Traffic Services chief executive Martin Rolfe said initial investigations show the failure "relates to some of the flight data we received". Primary and back-up systems used by the company responded by "suspending automatic processing", he added.

Some travellers struggling to get home from foreign destinations have been forced to sleep on floors or take long routes by land after their flights were cancelled. Airlines have been criticised for failing to book hotel rooms for many people who were delayed overnight.

The number of delays and cancellations at this point today, while significant, is far lower than yesterday at the same time, suggesting that the disruption has eased considerably since more than 1,500 flights were impacted on Monday.

Heathrow Airport

The UK's busiest airport was among the hardest hit yesterday, and that trend is continuing today. At least 42 flights to and from the airport have been cancelled today, and many more are expected to be delayed. Many British Airways flights due to depart from Heathrow have been grounded, included the 8.50am to Manchester and the 7.55am to Aberdeen.

A Heathrow spokesperson said: "While there is still some disruption as a result of Monday's air traffic restrictions, the vast majority of passengers will be able to travel as planned through Heathrow today. We continue to recommend passengers check with their airline for the latest information about their flight."

Gatwick Airport

The Surrey airport seems to be in a much better place today than yesterday, with no departures cancelled as of 9am this morning, and only seven arrivals grounded. That compares to the 23 departures and 51 arrivals that were cancelled from the airport by the same point yesterday.

Stewart Wingate, chief executive of London Gatwick, said: "We worked closely with our partners to make sure the airport was well-resourced ahead of the summer. This and the hard work of our frontline colleagues helped us provide passengers with a good level of service, despite a challenging operational environment across much of Europe. We will continue working closely with our airport partners to improve punctuality, supported by projects in our new capital investment programme to build airport resilience and long-term sustainable growth."

Everything seems to be back to normal at the Essex Airport, where there are no flights cancelled so far today. This is compared to the ten that were cancelled at this time yesterday. A spokesperson for the airport said: "London Stansted is operating as normal today with a full flight schedule with no planned cancellations."

Manchester Airport

The situation at Manchester Airport is much improved, 24 hours after 17 flights to and from the travel hub had been cancelled, and 25 were expected to be delayed across Tuesday. So far today two arrivals are cancelled - the 9.55am from Heathrow and the 4.35pm from Tenerife and one departure is grounded - the 10.50am to Heathrow.

A spokesperson for the airport told the Mirror: "It is more or less business as usual today. The only residual disruption we have is affecting Jet2 and as they have more displaced crew and planes still than others – but it’s still very small numbers."

Birmingham City Airport

Services are largely back to normal at Birmingham City Airport, where delays expected today are minimal and there are three cancellations expected - the 7.25pm from Heraklion, and two Jet2 services to Heraklion this morning.

Edinburgh Airport

The 10.10am to Heathrow is cancelled, as are 5.30pm and 11.10pm services to the same airport, and the 11.10am to Eindhoven. One arrival is grounded so far today, from Heathrow. This compares to ten cancellations this time yesterday. A spokesperson for Edinburgh said: "Schedules are returning to normal here. We’ll of course continue to support our partners where needed, and assist with repatriation flights if required. The advice as always is that passengers should check with their airline for any information on their flight."
