The Idol has officially been axed by HBO and any plans for a second season have been shut down. The show followed Lily Rose Depp's character, Jocelyn, as she begins a complicated relationship with the head of a contemporary cult, The Weeknd.

The Idol received tons of awful reviews from critics and backlash from fans who were in a constant state of cringe as they were subject to "unnecessary" sex scenes and "poorly written" dialogue. Some viewers took to Twitter to share that they weren't shocked by the news, with one writing: "I think we could all see this coming from a mile away. Before the second episode even dropped."

A second added: "I’m surprised they even let them finish the finale," before a third chimed in, adding: "This is one cancellation I vehemently support."

"Thank god that show was one of the worst things i have ever see in my life," a fourth harshly wrote. Others urged The Weeknd, who's real name is Abel Tesfaye, to stick to working on his successful music career, with one typing: "I know I speak for the majority of people when I say we want to see The Weeknd act again."

A spokesperson for the television company that has created hit shows like Euphoria, Game of Thrones and Succession, told Variety: "The Idol’ was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs, and we’re pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We’re grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work.”

Before the show's release, it was heavily described as "torture porn" which was created by "toxic man" Sam Levinson, while a damning Rolling Stones report in March described the behind-the-scenes filming for the show as something which went "wildly, disgustingly off the rails".

Collider wrote: "What Levinson perceives as provocative and subversive is rather underwhelming. How can a show with so much nudity, sex, and eroticism be so bland?"

Despite the ongoing criticism, The Idol's star Lily-Rose has defended the show's director Sam. "Sam is, for so many reasons, the best director I have ever worked with. Never have I felt more supported or respected in a creative space, my input and opinions more valued.

"Working with Sam is a true collaboration in every way—it matters to him, more than anything, not only what his actors think about the work, but how we feel performing it," she told E! News.
