Passengers caught up in the aviation chaos today now have another thing to play on their mind.

The beer taps in Malaga Airport have run dry, according to Radio 1 and Sexted My Boss presenter Jordan North. The DJ, who was one of many people left to wander around the Spanish airport listlessly waiting for flight information, posted a picture of the dry-taps on his Twitter.

He is not the only person to make efforts to ease the pain of a lengthy wait. Lily Smith found herself stuck at Geneva Airport for more than 24 hours, only to discover that beer cost £9 in the Swiss travel hub. The impact of the technical issues yesterday are likely to be felt by thousands of passengers in different ways over the coming days.

Rafal Batko and his family, from Sheffield, spent the night at Leeds Bradford Airport after their flight to Krakow was cancelled. Rafal, who is flying out for his mother and father-in-law's wedding anniversary party, said: "We've been here for 17 hours. We tried to get into a hotel but there was no space because everyone was in the same position.

"It's stressful but fingers crossed we'll get on one today. If not we'll have to go home, we are tired and everything is too expensive to buy."

Andrew and Michelle Fawcett said they were "absolutely gutted" when they arrived at the airport to be told their flight to Crete had been cancelled. Andrew said: "Our holiday company told us to proceed to the airport as normal and when we got here someone from Jet2 told us our holiday had been cancelled. Not, 'we can get you on a later flight,' just cancelled.

"We've since been told Jet2 are trying to contact everyone to let them know if and when they can get them on another flight, but it may be up until Friday, our holiday company said. We're going to go back home, that's all we can do."

Friends Gillian Beggs, Clare Convery and Kay Smith have missed two days of their walking holiday in Krakow after both their first flight from Manchester and rescheduled flight from Leeds Bradford Airport were cancelled.

"We managed to get in a hotel last night but it's all costing quite a lot of money, with rescheduling and travel costs of getting here from Manchester. "We're frustrated and worried but we have to be pragmatic. There's nothing we can do about it now," Kay added.

A glitch in the NATS system used by traffic controllers, which provides details of every aircraft and their routes, stopped updating automatically yesterday. According to The Times sources have suggested that the issue could be the result of an incorrectly filed plan by a French airline.

Earlier, NATS chief Julie Kennedy said of the problem: "First of all, I'd like to apologise for the impact on people's travel plans today. Our teams worked hard to resolve the problem, and I'm pleased to say it was fixed earlier on this afternoon.

"However, it will take some time for flights to return to normal. And we will continue to work with the airlines and the airports to recover the situation. Our absolute priority is safety and we will be investigating very thoroughly what happened today."
