Britain left it to the final lap of the final race to win the medal which gave them a record-equalling 10 for the World Championships.

Nicole Yeargin, running the anchor leg of the women’s 4 x 400m, brought home a bronze medal to set aside the identical one won by the men’s quartet minutes earlier.

It meant that, a year out from the Olympics, Britain finished seventh in the table with two golds, three silvers and five bronze.

Yeargin was running the anchor leg because Victoria Ohuruogu, who is involved in an anti-doping investigation, was omitted by selectors at the last minute.

Yeargin let nobody down and said: “I was happy to be in the position I was and I held my own. The last two metres I was swimming for the line!”

Laviai Nielsen, Amber Anning and Ama Pipi had put her in position for the podium and they stopped the clock on 3:21.04 behind the fast-finishing Dutch winners.

The men’s quarter were also without their star turn after Matt Hudson-Smith, silver medallist in the individual 400m, was left out due to his Achilles issue.

Instead the anchor role was left to Rio Mitcham who finish off the earlier good work done by Alex Haydock-Wilson, Charlie Dobson and Lewis Davey, coming home behind Jamaica and France in 2:58.71.

Mitcham said: “That just shows the depth that we have, the belief that we have in ourselves. Whoever steps onto the track, we're going to do the job.”
