Florence and The Machine cancel gigs as lead singer has 'life-saving' surgery

Florence and The Machine singer Florence Welch has revealed she has had ‘life-saving’ emergency surgery days after pulling out of a string of gigs.

The You’ve Got The Love songstress took to Instagram to apologise to fans for having to pull out of concerts at the last minute, but stopped short of revealing exactly what the surgery was as she didn’t “feel strong enough” to go into details just yet.

Posting a message on Instagram, the 36-year-old - who broke her foot on stage last year - told her 2.2 million followers: “I’m so sorry that I had to cancel the last couple of shows. My feet are fine, I had to have emergency surgery for reasons I don’t really feel strong enough to go into yet, but it saved my life.”

Sharing she was taking some time off to recover but planned to be back on stage soon, Florence continued: “I will be back to close out the Dance Fever tour in Lisbon and Malaga (Maybe not jumping so much but you can do that for me).

“Suffice to say I wish the songs were less accurate in their predictions. But creativity is a way of coping, mythology is a way of making sense. And the dark fairytale of Dance Fever, with all its strange prophecies, will provide me with much needed strength and catharsis right now.”

Fans were quick to comment underneath showing their support for the star, with one writing: “Omg Flo. I’m gathering all the good and beautiful energy inside me to wish you the most speedy recovery. I love you to death and I’m so, so, so, grateful that you are okay! Take care my love@ Get well soon.”

Another said: “You don’t have to share with us what happened. Like, ever. It’s your life and your pain and you don’t owe us an explanation or sharing of something that is only yours to feel. Just have in mind that your health is the most important thing here, not just physical but mental too.”

A third commented: “I love your dedication to your craft but you didn’t have to dance yourself to death literal,”, while a fourth wrote: “I’m so glad you are safe. Thanks for letting us know. Love you so much Angel.” Another fan added: “Please don’t be sorry, especially if your life was on the line. Health before absolutely anything else. Just glad you’re ok, we are here for you” and quoted the Florence And The Machine lyric: “Jesus came back but in a beautiful dress.”

It comes six days after Florence revealed she would no longer be performing at Zurich Open Air Festival and Rock en Seine festival in Paris. Breaking the news in her Instagram stories, Florence wrote: “Sadly on medical advice, Florence + The Machine will not be able to perform this weekend at Zurich Open Air Festival on 25 Aug and Rock En Seine on 26 Aug. We appreciate your understanding and patience.”

Prior to that the band had successfully performed at gigs in Budapest, Buftea in Romania and at Boardmasters Festival in Cornwall in August, as well as concerts in Ireland, Milan, Croatia over the summer.

In November last year, Florence was rushed to hospital after it was feared she had broken her foot on stage during a gig at London’s O2 during the band’s Dance Fever tour, which led to more gigs being postponed.

Telling fans she was “heartbroken” at not being able to play, she wrote on Instagram at the time: "I'm so sorry to say that after an X-ray it seems I was dancing on a broken foot last night. It is not in my nature to postpone a show, and certainly not a UK tour, but I'm in pain and as dancers know, dancing on an injury is not a good idea. And I have been told not to perform to avoid further damage.

“Please hang on to your tickets. We are working our hardest to reschedule these dates for next year and we will let you know as soon as possible. I love you so much, and I'm so sorry to anyone who is disappointed. My heart is aching. I can't wait to be back on my feet and back in your arms".

For the moment, her recent surgery remains a mystery as Florence assured fans her “feet are fine”, so fans will have to wait for another update a bit further down the line. The Mirror has approached reps for Florence And The Machine for further comment on this story.
