Recalling attending Leeds Festival but now as a headline act, he said: “Ah it’s good to be back north, this is f***ing party night now. I can see there’s a few Geordies in here. I did that chant, I came to Leeds when I was 18-years-old. Me and Dean both came here when we were 18. And I f***ing got black out drunk watching Kasabian right here. I got lost and couldn’t find any of my mates, I started doing that chant ‘Dun dun black and white army’ and people joined in and that’s how I found my friends again. F***ing if you get lost, do that and you’ll find ya Geordies.”

Speaking to crowds, he explained that it was the most monumental moment of his career - months after selling out St. James’ Park his hometown. He said: “This f***er, it’s all Dean’s fault really like. He forced us to record this song,” as he urged the crowd to chant “Deano”.

Earlier in his set, Sam decided to halt his performance as a string of fans required medical assistance in the crowd. Prior to him taking to the stage, thousands rushed to the front pit in order to make the most of the atmosphere and catch an up close glimpse of the Mantra hitmaker. He told fans: “We need some help over here, let’s stop. You ok? You ok? You need help over here? We need help, we’re gonna have to calm down”

“You alright, can we give it up for medical staff and the security working here. Yas getting help? Does somebody need to get in there? What’s the craic? We need to clear a path *screens go off*” A source told the Mirror: “We’re not sure what happened but Sam acted very quickly and made sure that nothing happened until the medics and security got the fan out of the crowd.”
