Liverpool will test their top-four credentials on Sunday afternoon by taking on Premier League rivals Newcastle at St James' Park.

Both teams will be desperate to win the early-season fixture to see if they're capable of challenging for honours. Eddie Howe's side will be up for the challenge after hammering Aston Villa 5-1 at St James' Park on the opening day of the campaign.

Defeat for Liverpool could force Jurgen Klopp to bring in reinforcements before Friday's transfer deadline, despite having already spent £100million this summer. The Reds have splashed the cash to sign Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo.

But who is Klopp interested in? Here are the latest transfer rumours from Anfield...

Sane for Salah?

Liverpool are interested in signing Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane, according to Calciomercato. It's claimed the former Manchester City star, 27, is on Klopp's emergency transfer shortlist, just in case Mohamed Salah ditches Merseyside for Saudi Arabia.

Salah, 31, is a transfer target for Al-Ittihad and the Saudi Pro League champions will push hard to sign him before their transfer deadline. The Saudi transfer window doesn't shut until September 20, with Klopp facing three anxious weeks.

If Salah decides to leave Merseyside in a €100m (£85.8m) deal before the European deadline on Friday, Klopp will look elsewhere. It's believed Sane, who has two years remaining on his Bayern contract, could be available for around €65m (£55.8m).

Sane won the PFA Young Player of the Year award during his time at Man City and has scored 40 goals in 135 appearances since his move to Bayern three years ago. He remains one of the most exciting wingers in Europe and could still improve his game.

Phillips deal urged

Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper David James believes his former employers should sign Man City midfielder Kalvin Phillips. The Reds need to sign a new holding midfielder after Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia both reject them to join Chelsea.

It's believed Liverpool are considering an audacious move for Phillips, 27. The England international has barely played since joining Man City a year ago, watching much of their Treble-winning season from the comfort of Pep Guardiola's bench.

Speaking to GGRecon, James said: "I believe Kalvin Phillips is a terrific player... There’s absolutely no reason why Kalvin Phillips wouldn’t fit into that Liverpool side."

Keen on Cambiaso

Liverpool are interested in Juventus left-back Andrea Cambiaso, according to Calciomercato. The Italy youth international, 23, impressed during a loan spell at Bologna last season and started Juventus' recent 3-0 victory against Udinese.

The Reds could face competition for Cambiaso's signature, with Tottenham and Nottingham Forest also believed to be interested in him. It's unclear whether Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri would be willing to let the player leave Turin.
