Romelu Lukaku reveals next club with Chelsea misfit set to seal deal on Sunday

Former Chelsea record signing Romelu Lukaku has confirmed he is on his way to sign with Roma for the upcoming season.

The Belgium international rejoined Chelsea in the summer of 2021 in a £97.5m move from Internazionale. After a tricky first season back in London, in which he failed to reach double-figures for league goals, he returned to the San Siro on loan last season.

Inter explored another return, while Juventus also looked into making a move for the 30-year-old. Instead, though, Roma are ready to take the plunge with a loan move which will reunite Lukaku with his former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, though at the time of writing they have yet to reach a concrete agreement with Chelsea over the terms of the deal.

“Tomorrow I will fly to Rome to sign," Lukaku told reporters in Belgium on Saturday (via The Sun). It will be the third time he and Mourinho have worked together, having also briefly been together at Chelsea during the manager's second stint.

Roma captain was also asked about the move on Saturday, and acknowledged Roma were working on the deal. The Giallorossi started with Andrea Belotti and Paulo Dybala in attack at Verona on Saturday night, but neither found the net in a 2-1 loss.

“I don’t know what Lukaku would bring, but there are those who are working to make it happen," Pellegrini told DAZN (via Football Italia). "When it will be done, then we’ll see what he can bring, otherwise it’s like talking about any player in the world.”

Roma went behind early when former Norwich man Ondrej Duda struck inside five minutes, and Cyril Ngonge made it two before half-time. Summer signing Houssem Aouar pulled one back, but the hosts held on even after going down to 10 men for the final few minutes.

Lukaku's arrival can't come soon enough for Roma, given their injury issues up front. Dybala picked up a thigh problem in Verona, while former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham remains sidelined by the knee injury he suffered at the end of last season.

Earlier in the week, Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino explained the situation with Lukaku. “The situation with the player you are asking, is a situation that was already really clear before we arrived here," he said. "There was a wish between the club and the player to try to find a solution.

‌“At the moment we are relaxed and nothing happened. If something changes we will inform you. If the player and club’s wish is to find a solution, it's not me, it's them.

‌“In that case, the player and the club will meet and inform me that things have changed. I'm not going to move until the club or the player wants to talk with me. I am here, I accept the situation that was here when I arrived.”
