Details have emerged after the shock death of WWE superstar Bray Wyatt, real name Windham Rotunda, aged just 36. He passed away on Thursday having been out of action since February due to a mystery illness.

He died of a heart attack, according to Fightful. It is reported he had heart issues which were exacerbated after he caught COVID, but there was positive progress in his recovery prior to his death.

In the statement announcing his passing, WWE chief content officer Paul 'Triple H' Levasque, revealed that his death was "unexpected". He wrote on social media: “Just received a call from WWE Hall of Famer Mike Rotunda who informed us of the tragic news that our WWE family member for life Windham Rotunda - also known as Bray Wyatt - unexpectedly passed earlier today. Our thoughts are with his family and we ask that everyone respect their privacy at this time.”

Wyatt was a three-time world champion during his time with WWE, twice holding the Universal Championship and having one stint as WWE Champion. He was released by the company unexpectedly in 2021 but returned triumphantly in October 2022.

He was due to face Bobby Lashley at WrestleMania in April but his illness caused the storyline to be halted abruptly. He was believed to be close to being cleared for a return before his sudden death.

The third-generation wrestler was originally the leader of The Wyatt Family, where he fought alongside Luke Harper and Erick Rowan. He later adopted a new persona with an alter ego known as 'The Fiend' and was a popular figure in the sport.

He was engaged to former WWE ring announcer Joseann 'JoJo' Offerman and the pair had two children together, whilst he also fathered two children with ex-wife Samantha.

Speaking on The Bellas Podcast earlier this year, JoJo revealed the pair planned to get married in 2023. "We're not officially married," Offerman said. "Engaged. But we will be married at the end of the year.

"We've picked our date and everything. I'm really excited. It's fun, the kids are crazy."

The WWE announced all proceeds from Bray Wyatt merchandise sales would go to his family. "In the wake of Bray Wyatt's death, WWE will donate all net proceeds to support JoJo Offerman and his children," a note under his merchandise read.

Tributes poured in for Wyatt after his death, including a heartfelt post from WWE legend Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. He wrote: "I'm heartbroken over the news of Bray Wyatt’s passing. Always had tremendous respect and love for him and the Rotunda family. Loved his presence, promos, in ring work and connection with WWE universe.

"Very unique, cool and rare character, which is hard to create in our crazy world of pro wrestling. Still processing losing the goat, Terry Funk yesterday and now Bray today. My love, light, strength & mana to the Rotunda family and Funk family during this tough, heartbreaking time."
