This May, Labour stormed to victory in the local elections, becoming the biggest party in local government for the first time since 2002.

That was a massive vote of confidence in Labour to deliver for local people – and a sign that residents were fed up with years of Conservative failure. Before the dust had even settled on that stunning result, our 22 new council leaders got to work.

At a meeting with Keir Starmer and senior members of his Shadow Cabinet in May, they agreed to deliver emergency cost of living action plans within 100 days of taking control. Just over 100 days later, they are taking real action to ease the squeeze on people’s pockets right across our country.

Take Medway Council, which has invested in a Low Income Family Tracker - so they can identify households that could be eligible for financial support but aren’t yet claiming it. Or Stoke-on-Trent, bringing together over 60 different organisations or people with a contribution to make to protect residents from the cost of living crisis, slashing bus fares, and committing to upgrading 14,000 council homes.

Then there’s Brighton and Hove Council, which has cancelled the previous Green administration’s inflation-busting 300% increase on parking charges for the city’s main hospital. From Bracknell Forest to Swindon, the City of York to Plymouth, our Labour Councils are taking swift action to deliver for working people and their families.

Contrast that with the weak and rudderless leadership from the Conservatives. While Labour’s councils pull every lever to tackle rising costs, the tax burden under the Tories is at its highest level since the Second World War.

People are being hit hard by a Tory mortgage penalty that has led to over a million mortgage holders paying thousands more each year. And despite their empty promises, inflation in Britain remains high – and higher than many other major economies.

Instead of tackling these rising costs, Rishi Sunak is posting naff tweets and appointing a lavatory tsar. It’s clear the Tories have run out of ideas and run out of road. But working people and their families shouldn’t have to pay the price for their failure.

They deserve a party with a clear plan to build a better Britain. Labour’s missions focus relentlessly on the people’s priorities. Right across the country, people are desperate for change. And where Labour is in power, we deliver that change.

It’s time for a General Election so that we can get on with the job of delivering for the whole of our great country.
