Gylfi Sigurdsson closes in on transfer after not playing for over two years
Danish side Lyngby Boldklub are "optimistic" of completing a deal for Gylfi Sigurdsson.
The Iceland international, 33, hasn't played a competitive game for more than two years. He left Everton when his contract expired in June 2022 and has struggled to find a club since, despite interest from Major League Soccer outfit DC United.
Lyngby compete in the Superliga, the highest level of Danish football. They are seventh in the table after picking up seven points from their opening five games.
Lyngby already have three Icelandic players on their books in Kolbeinn Finnsson, Saevar Atli Magnusson and Andri Gudjohnsen. Their manager Freyr Alexandersson is also Icelandic and coached Sigurdsson during his time as the country's assistant boss.
Alexandersson recently spoke to Danish outlet Bold about the possibility of signing Sigurdsson. He said: "There is always hope. We are in good dialogue with Gylfi, so right now I'm optimistic that it can happen. But right now there is nothing in place.

"So we just have to give him a few weeks so he can work on those things in relation to his body. So let's look at it within two/three weeks."
As Sigurdsson is a free agent, Lyngby don't need to sign him before the transfer widow closes on September 1. Yet they will want to complete the deal soon to boost their hopes of climbing the table. They will also be concerned about another club swooping in.
Sigurdsson is regarded as one of the best Icelandic footballers of his generation after a stellar career in England. He joined Reading's academy in 2005 and enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2009/10, making 44 appearances to win the club's Player of the Year award.

He scored seven goals in 18 Premier League games during a successful loan spell.
Swansea tried to sign Sigurdsson on a permanent basis but failed due to Tottenham's interest. Spurs signed the midfielder in July 2012, but he failed to nail down a spot in the starting XI and finally signed a long-term deal with Swansea two years later.
Sigurdsson enjoyed three superb seasons at the Liberty Stadium - scoring 27 goals in 106 league games and winning Swansea's Player of the Year award twice - to persuade Everton to pay a club-record £40million for him. He went on to feature 156 times for the Toffees.
Sigurdsson didn't play during the final year of his contract at Goodison Park. His most recent appearance came in May 2021 when Everton lost 5-0 to Manchester City. Sigurdsson missed a penalty in that match.
