Corey Davis was set for a big role with the team this season

New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis has announced his retirement from the NFL at the age of 28.

Davis was recently projected to be a starting wide receiver for the Jets and an important player for new quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but he has decided to walk away from the game. In his statement posted on his social media platforms, Davis explained his decision to retire despite being in his prime years.

He wrote: "For some time now I've been contemplating stepping away from the sport of football. This decision has not been easy.

"Although I am a deep person, I am a man or few words. I've been searching my heart for what to do and I feel that stepping away from the game is the best path for me at this time.

"I have more blessings than I could have ever imagined - I have an amazing family, a beautiful wife and two healthy children that I look forward to spending more time with.

"I am truly grateful for all the opportunities I have had and will continue to have on my journey. Thank you to my family and friends and the Jets organization for supporting me through this process."

Although the Jets have ascending rookie Garrett Wilson as their go-to option, along with Rodgers bringing his two favourite Green Bay Packers receivers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb on the roster, Davis was still set for a big role.

Davis had 536 yards and two touchdowns last season, after becoming the second-option after Wilson quickly became a star in his rookie season.

A former fifth-overall pick with the Tennessee Titans, Davis was projected to be a future superstar in the league, but never quite developed into that after leaving the Titans following four solid, but not spectacular, years.

The Jets had also surprisingly cut second-round pick Denzel Mims earlier this offseason, and now may look for additional players at the position. However, they looked to have hit on undrafted rookie Jacob Brownlee, who has been a standout throughout training camp and has emerged as an option to make the team.

The Jets are also likely to be a run-heavy team, after acquiring Dalvin Cook as well as having Breece Hall on the roster.
