The family of a DPD driver killed in a "gang attack" have shared their sorrow at the tragedy today.

Aurman Singh, 23, died following the horror in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, in which he was allegedly ambushed. It was reported yesterday the young driver was making a delivery when a gang wielding "blades and blunt objects" set upon him.

His family, via West Mercia Police, today said: "There are no words that could ever explain the impact this tragedy has had on me and my family. Today a mother will grow old without her son. A sister will grow up without her brother. We don’t want what has happened to us to happen to another family.

"We would like to thank the police for conducting their investigation diligently and supporting us through this tough time."

Five men, including four in their 20s, have been arrested and remain in police custody while enquiries continue. One was arrested more than 120 miles away in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. A Magistrate’s warrant of further detention has been granted, West Mercia Police added.

Investigations continue into the death of Mr Singh, who lived in Smethwick, West Midlands. Officers say they are carrying out a number of enquiries as no motive has been identified at this stage.

"Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of Aurman at this difficult time," Senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Mark Bellamy, said.

“Our investigation is underway with officers carrying out a number of enquiries to establish the circumstances that led to Aurman’s murder.

“We know Aurman was a delivery person however at this stage we do not believe this was the motive for his death and we are not investigating this as a robbery.

“We believe those involved are known to each other and are not local to Shrewsbury or the wider West Mercia Police area.

“We have so far arrested five people in connection with the murder and are progressing all other lines of enquiry to locate and arrest outstanding suspects.”

Neighbours have spoken after witnessing the aftermath of the deadly attack earlier this week. One man, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "I got back home ten minutes after it happened and saw the man's body covered by a sheet in the street. My first concern was for my neighbours, young families were locking themselves in their homes until we knew what had happened.

"Police are being very tight-lipped with us, so something major has happened. It's awful that something this tragic can happen on our wonderful little estate. I have lived here 26 years and nothing like this has ever happened before. It's just indicative of the world we're living in at the moment."
