Rookies inevitably get a hard time as they enter the NFL and Dallas Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn is no exception.

Vaughn was one of the more intriguing prospects in his draft class back in April and the 5ft 5in rusher became the shortest player in the entire league when he was drafted in the sixth round by the Cowboys.

Vaughn has replaced New England Patriots running back JJ Taylor as the shortest player in the NFL, but the 21-year-old was a hugely productive player in college despite his height disadvantage. At Kansas State University, he enjoyed three good seasons, peaking last year with 1,558 rushing yards, plus 348 receiving yards and 12 total touchdowns.

The 21-year-old has made a strong first impression with his new team, too, but he has not avoided the customary ribbing from his teammates that is part and parcel of making the grade in the NFL.

"Everybody do me a favour and pass the message," Cowboys star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb said in video on Instagram. "Deuce, stop leaving your cleats and your gloves in the locker room. This is not your home."

The cleats and gloves in question were, unsurprisingly given his height, on the smaller side, and many fans enjoyed poking a bit of fun at Vaughn, but the running back is showing he is no joke on the field and he could emerge as an impact player for Dallas in the coming months.

Vaughn's college resume also included two All-American accolades, but he was relegated to the third day of the draft due to his size. That has not prevented him from making a big impact in pre-season, though.

Across two games with Dallas, the diminutive rusher has racked up 64 rushing yards on 13 carries at an average of almost five yards per rush. And with a couple of touchdowns and some highlight plays to boot, the rookie is looking like an intriguing weapon for Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy to put to use alongside Tony Pollard this season.

"I can't take all the credit," Vaughn said after scoring his second touchdown of pre-season in a 22-14 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. "It was great scheme, great blocking up front and I put the ball in the endzone for the second time in a row. As the weeks go, I'm just building that consistency and trying to put my best foot forward.

"I was more comfortable this week in playing faster. Last week, I felt a couple of times in pass protection or running the football that I wasn't playing as fast because I was thinking a bit more. But another game under my belt and I felt I played a little faster."

McCarthy has certainly been impressed by Vaughn's performances since being drafted. The head coach said on August 10: “I think Deuce has had a really good camp. His work yesterday was off the charts, just the amount of work he had in special teams, so what I’m going to is the versatility. He’s really shown excellent versatility from special teams to offense.”
