A British man is in a coma after eight holidaymakers were injured in a horror crash in Portugal.

Finn Webber suffered head injuries, a broken leg and a dislocated hip after an oil tanker slammed into the two cars the group were travelling in on a dual carriageway.

The 23-year-old from Combwich, Somerset and his brother Sam, 18, had to be cut free from the wreckage by fire crews. Finn is now emerging from a coma in hospital two weeks after the smash on August 9.

The tanker ploughed into the group’s vehicles after they performed emergency stops because of an accident ahead. Sam and sister Megan, 24, suffered broken bones while another sister 15-year-old Isobel, mum Ali and dad Dan as well as two family friends were also hurt.

Finn did not have travel insurance so a crowd fundraising appeal has been launched to raise the £40,000 needed to fly him back to the UK. Organiser Iveta Lacy-Hulbert said Sam and Isobel are unable to walk and are learning to use crutches and wheelchairs while mum Ali has nerve damage to her hands and cannot perform daily tasks.

She added: “The family are touched by the support. Just to know how many people care for Finn and for their family is helping them to feel stronger. Thank you very much to every single one of you who made a donation and sent messages.

“Those who know the Webbers personally know how kind, generous, and supportive they are towards other people and always help those in need.”
