Veteran radio host Chris Evans shocked fans on Monday when he announced live on air that he has been diagnosed with a freighting health condition.

The 57-year-old father-of-five has been living in the spotlight since the 1990s when he made the leap from radio broadcasting to television presenting - hosting huge TV shows including The Big Breakfast and TGI Fridays. He has cemented his name as a radio legend, however, having won over millions of listeners on BBC Radio 1, Virgin Radio and Radio 2.

And while he entertains listeners with his quips and insights, his private life has also generated interest - with fans becoming concerned when he shared that he has been diagnosed with skin cancer. The star announced the news on his Virgin Radio show - and revealed his prognosis was looking good as he was diagnosed early.

He explained: "We need to discuss what's going on with this issue. It is a melanoma. There's this phrase called a malignant melanoma - you know once you get something, and you find out all about it - that is a redundant phrase because if it is a melanoma it is malignant.”

He added: “But it's been caught so early, just so you know, that it should be completely treatable." And he also told fans he is scheduled to be treated for the condition on 14 September.

This is the latest in a number of health conditions to leave Chris shaken. Back in 2015, he declared he had been scared “half to death” after enduring a prostrate cancer scare. He told listeners at the time: “Prostate cancer, and colon cancer of course, are one of the most survivable forms of cancer there is, if caught early enough. If not, one of the least.

"It's a fine line between life and death, happiness and tragedy. And I've got to say I'm in the middle of a prostate issue right now. I couldn't stop. I have not been able to stop since Christmas – peeing – or wanting to go.

"So I've gone to the doctor. I've done all the internet stuff you shouldn't do. I've gone on the internet, scared myself half to death, then gone to see the doctor. And we really should do it the other way round. However, I am in the middle of the tests."

He explained he had been given the all clear later in 2015.

Back in the noughties, Chris was known for his wild behaviour - famously binge drinking in the day with his behaviour jeprodisring his career. He later explained that he gave in to dangerous indulgence when his personal wealth soared to £87 million - revealing he was addicted to sex and leant heavily on alcohol while in a downward spiral of self destruction.

Speaking to the Daily Mail in 2010, he said: “I went off the rails because I thought it might be interesting. I was in control then. But I lost control, because I was playing with fire. I’m not saying I won’t play with fire again, but I don’t know if there’s any more fire to be played with.”

The report stated: “The consequences of his lost years are listed in his book as Ten Things That Can Happen When You Fail to Confront an Awkward Situation. They include high blood pressure, panic attacks, ulcers, overeating, insomnia, depression, self-loathing and self-destruction, as well as sex addiction.”

And asked if he did suffer from this side effects, he confirmed: “Yep. It’s all about getting yourself out of reality, whether it’s alcohol or whatever. I’ve never done drugs. But when you’re having great sex the rest of the world doesn’t matter. It’s not like I can’t leave it alone; it’s just that it’s convenient and it works as an anaesthetic.”

He also concluded he was unsure if he was an alcoholic, stating when asked if he was: “I don’t know, is the answer. I don’t think I do, but I’m not saying that I don’t.”
