Inside Lionesses' World Cup after-party as England stars toast run to final
England players commiserated with friends and family at an after-party following their Women's World Cup Final defeat to Spain.
The Lionesses had been hoping to bring home the country's first senior World Cup since 1966, but it wasn't to be for Sarina Wiegman's side, who were second best in Sunday's contest at Stadium Australia. Spain captain Olga Carmona scored the winner for La Roja, while England goalkeeper Mary Earps made a superb penalty save to deny Jenni Hermoso in the second half.
Many of Wiegman's squad were in tears after the final whistle, however they were later consoled by loved ones at an after-party in Sydney. Arsenal striker Alessia Russo was pictured alongside her parents and two brothers, Luca and Giorgio - with the latter sharing a sweet post on Instagram celebrating his sister's achievements.
He wrote: "What a incredible journey it’s been the last month. These lionesses have been on some journey, they have once again brought a whole nation together and done their whole country so proud.
"To come off the back of winning the Euros last year and then finishing second in the World Cup is remarkable. I am so proud to have been able to be in Australia with my family to watch my sister compete at the highest level and I am so proud of you @alessiarusso99."
Earps reacts to FIFA Best nomination and on season so far with Man Utd
Russo's best friend and former Manchester United teammate Ella Toone was also spotted celebrating with boyfriend Joe Bunney. Bunney, who plays football himself for non-league side Stalybridge Celtic, wrote on Instagram: "It hurts but when the dust settles the realisation of what this team has achieved is remarkable.
"It’s been incredible to follow @ellatoone & the lionesses on this journey. You certainly have created history & memories that will last a lifetime. Nothing but pride, the highs & lows you have faced throughout the tournament, you enjoyed the highs & use all stuck together & pulled through in tough times like a proper lioness pride would.
"Last summer you inspired a nation of young girls & boys when winning the euros & finalissama, you have now carried that inspiration on & inspired everyone on the world stage."
Sarina Wiegman's squad were also spotted at Sydney Airport on Monday ahead of their journey back to the UK. The Lionesses were applauded by members of the public as they made their way through the airport.
