Alex Scott was left emotional after watching a distraught Lucy Bronze struggle on the pitch following England's defeat in the World Cup final.

The Lionesses headed into Sunday's showdown against Spain bidding to make even more history after reaching the showpiece final for the first time in their history. But Sarina Wiegman's side were left heartbroken courtesy of a first-half strike from Olga Carmona.

After battling to find an equaliser, several England players were left distraught at the final whistle, including Bronze, who lost possession shortly before Spain's winning goal. The Barcelona defender was inconsolable on the pitch, and Scott was understandably distressed at the sight of her former teammate in tears.

Speaking on BBC Sport, Scott said: "I was doing alright you know, seeing Luce and those tears has just got me. It’s not on her that England have lost this game today but we all know her mentality and how much that is going to pain her and it’s not on him. Lucy is an incredible person and incredible player and someone needs to go and put her arm around her, please."

Fara Williams, another former England star, also defender Bronze and praised the character she showed following Carmona's goal. Williams added: "I think she showed she was involved in giving the ball away for Spain’s goal but what Lucy showed in the second half was character and personality and leadership. The way she drove her team on in that second half how much it meant to her and how much that mistake was playing in her mind."

Bronze and the rest of Wiegman's team, who won the European Championships last summer, battled admirably to salvage Sunday's final during the second-half but were unable to complete the turnaround. And Wiegman admitted the better team on the day won.

She told BBC Sport: "I think everyone has seen an incredible game, a very open game between two teams that wanted to play football. I think in the first half we struggled but we changed to a 4-4-3 in the second. I thought we got momentum but then the penalty and injury with Greenwood [happened].

"Overall I think Spain were a little better than us today. Congratulations to Spain. Of course, it feels really bad now, very very disappointing. You go into the final and you want to give everything and then you lose it.

"That happens in sports too but what we have done, how we have shown ourselves, who we are, how we want to play as a team, overcoming so many challenges, I think we can be so proud of ourselves now although it doesn't feel like it at the moment."
