Text messages from Lucy Letby reveal her obsession with a married doctor at her hospital with her infatuation causing her to harm babies “knowing he'd rush to help”.

The shocking claims come as murderer Letby’s texts to an anonymous paediatric registrar doctor were made public in court. The pair worked at the Countess of Chester Hospital where Letby killed seven babies on the neonatal ward and attempted to murder six others.

She now awaits sentencing for her horrific crimes after she was found guilty of killing the babies by intentionally injecting them with air, force-feeding milk, and poisoning two with insulin. She is thought to be facing life behind bars and is on 24-hour suicide watch while in jail waiting for the sentencing hearing. In a shocking reveal from court evidence, it has been claimed she intentionally killed babies to attract the attention of a doctor she was infatuated with, The Star reports.

It is claimed Letby wanted to impress the doctor and manufactured crisis situations so they could work together - as he would come running to save the collapsed babies. The doctor also paid a visit to her home, despite Letby insisting the pair were just “best friends” and nothing more. Text messages show how she called him “sweetie”, and that he admitted she was “one of a few nurses across the region that I would trust with my own children”.

The two even discussed going on holiday together and he brought her chocolates to work. In a shocking turn the doctor she had befriended turned up in court to give evidence against Letby, causing her to have an emotional breakdown and try to leave the dock at the time. In texts with a colleague who spotted her flirting with the doctor and accused Letby she replied: “I don't flirt with him! Certainly, don't fancy him ha ha, just a nice guy.”

Prosecutor Nick Johnson KC suggested during the trial that her attacks on four babies were deliberate attempts to create "crisis situations" knowing he would come. A note was found in her house had the doctor’s name repeatedly written on it and love hearts. She wrote: “My best friend...LOVE...I loved you and I think you knew that...I wanted you to stand by me but you didn't.” It is believed that the doctor now works at a different hospital in another part of the country.

Following her conviction the government has ordered an independent inquiry into the circumstances behind the murders and attempted murders of babies at the Countess of Chester Hospital. The Department of Health said the inquiry will investigate the wider circumstances around what happened at the hospital, including the handling of concerns and governance, and will also look at what actions were taken by regulators and the wider NHS.
