Famous dog made a viral meme during pandemic dies age 12 while in surgery
A famous meme dog popularised during the Covid pandemic has tragically died aged 12 during cancer surgery.
The viral dog, named Cheems, was adopted by a loving family in Hong Kong and first became famous back in 2017 when a photograph of him went global.
The Shiba Inu had a love of cheeseburgers and even had his meme character "Cheemsburger" as his picture became a much-used meme during the pandemic.
His devastated owners paid tribute to their much-loved pet, penning an emotional tribute to the 12-year-old, who was often referred to as "Ball Ball" by his owners on social media.

The viral meme dog passed away during a surgical procedure (instagram.com/balltze)They wrote on Instagram: "Ball Ball fell asleep on Friday morning during his last thoracentesis surgery. Originally, we wanted to arrange chemotherapy or other possible treatment for him after this operation, but it is too late now.
"Don’t be sad, please remember the joy that Balltze brought to the world. A Shiba Inu with a round smiling face connecting you and me, he has helped many people during the pandemic and brought a lot of joy to many of you, but now his mission has been completed.
"I believe he is running freely in the sky and having a lot of delicious food with his new friends. He will always be inside my heart. I hope he can continue to bring joy to everyone in the online world, that’s my only humble request.

Social media users lined up to pay their tribute to the 12-year-old. One Twitter user wrote: "Forever in our hearts. Always brought in so much joy on my feed. Rest in peace."
Another user wrote: "Cheems, the beloved dog who became an internet sensation, has left a void in our hearts with his passing. Though he's no longer with us, his iconic memes will continue to thrive on our devices, in our thoughts & across the digital landscape.
