A 21-year-old family dog has found her forever home after the elderly pooch was surrendered as unwanted. Labrador mix, Holly, has been taken in by a rescue centre after her previous owner told a dog warden to put her to sleep.

Thankfully, rescuers refused to give up on Holly and they found her a retirement home. The adorable dog, who still loves cuddles, was taken to Monaghan Dog Pound before she was transferred to nearby Carrick Dog Shelter. Now, she's settling in at Heather House, Co Down, according to Belfast Live. Helen Hewett, manager of the Carrick Dog Shelter, Co Monaghan, said: "It is beyond belief that anyone could surrender their dog at the age of 21 and tell the dog warden to take her away and put her to sleep - with only strangers by her side.

"On Tuesday we had dog admitted to our care. The dog warden received a call to collect Holly and take her away with the owner asking for her to be put to sleep. She was given a reference number 288 by the council and the dog warden was excellent and understood this old girl still had a good bit of life about her. So they contacted us to see if we could help.

"With her original paper work, they were able to confirm her name was Holly and she is 21. She'd lived all of her life with the same owner by the time she was surrendered this week. She's thin and her eyesight and hearing are dull, but she's engaged and she ate a good meal, wagged her tail and leaned on us for cuddles. This dog was not ready to be put to sleep - anyone could see that.

"We reached out for help for this special girl and the team at Almost Home in Moira contacted us and offered her a home in their elderly care unit, Heather House. One of our volunteers put Holly in the car immediately and drove to Moira and handed Holly over to the team there". She added: "There's certainly life in the old dog yet. As with all dog shelters we have heartbreaking days and moments that we just cannot comprehend. This was one of them. In human years Holly is almost 150 years old and everything she was familiar with in her life was suddenly taken from her and she had to start again. To get to this age is remarkable and shows a love of life. She deserves the very best and every chance of life, and a good life and she will get that now, whether in Heather House or with a family."

Sharing an update on Facebook today (Friday), confirmed Holly will be able to enjoy the rest of her days in a retirement home. Posting photos of Holly relaxing in the sun, the charity wrote: "It is incredibly sad that [Holly] found herself in need of a home at the grand old age of 21. Thankfully, we were able to offer her a permanent home in Heather House, our retirement home for elderly dogs. After a long and no doubt confusing journey from Monaghan, [Holly] was settled in with her new friends. Despite the disruption in her life, this sweet girl's tail was hasn't stopped wagging. Who knows how much longer [Holly] has but one thing we can promise is that for whatever time she has, she will be truly loved and cared for by our Heather House team. Welcome to the family."
