Noughties rocker Chad Kroeger looked unrecognisable more than 20 years after his band topped the charts.

The Nickelback frontman, who won over fans with his signature blonde hair, now looks completely different 22 years after he first topped the UK charts with the Canadian rock band’s hit, How You Remind Me. The song was from their third album, Silver Side Up, and they were catapulted to superstardom following the success of the song.

The band, which comprised of keyboard player and vocalist Ryan Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger and drummer Daniel Adair, formed in 1995 in Hanna, Alberta, and have since sold more than 50 million albums, despite facing a vicious backlash to in the late 2000s. However, they’ve managed to stage a successful comeback, and in a new interview, Chad spoke about the band’s famous hits.

During an appearance on Tom Power’s YouTube channel, Chad and Ryan discussed the rock band’s hugely successful career, as they were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. But fans were gobsmacked by how different the rock frontman looked, as he had chopped off his signature blonde locks and replaced them with a trendy short hairdo.

His manicured goatee had also been removed, and replaced instead with stubble, with many fans suggesting he looked younger now than he did when he burst onto the rock scene with Nickelback. Wearing a black top and dark jeans, Chad looked carefree as he discussed Nickelback’s hit singles, and touched upon why the rock band were suddenly subjected to cruel criticism later on in their career.

Chad confessed he was devastated that the band became the butt of jokes, and said it was now “really nice to not be Public Enemy Number One” as the band recruited a new generation of fans. “That kind of used to be a thing. I shouldn’t say ‘that kind of used to be’ - that was definitely a thing for a long time,” he said back in May while speaking on Arizona’s KFMA-FM. “And I think there’s been a softening - there really has, thankfully.”

Away from his professional life, Chad found himself subjected to intense scrutiny thanks to his high-profile relationship with fellow rocker Avril Lavigne. They began dating in 2012 after he worked with the singer for her fifth album, and their friendship blossomed into romance. After one month of dating, they became engaged, and tied the knot in a lavish ceremony in the south of France. However, the union was not meant to be, as they divorced in 2015.
