A murdered crypto mogul introduced his alleged killer into the world of cryptocurrency and helped him with investments before his brutal slaying, it has been claimed.

Authorities are theorising whether jealousy and money could have been a motive in the gruesome killing of Christian Peev, a 41-year-old American, who had built a fortune off of investments in cryptocurrency.

Vesco Valchinov, a former bartender and friend of Mr Peev, was arrested in relation to the case after horrified plumbers found Peev's remains chopped up inside a blocked sewer.

Valchinov is now accused of having bludgeoned his victim to death with a dumbbell before chopping up his corpse and flushing some of the remains down a toilet in Peev's apartment in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Some of the parts that couldn't fit in the toilet, including his head and some bones, Valchinov buried elsewhere with the help of an accomplice named Konstantin Subotinov, police allege.

Peev and Valchinov knew each other for about five years, having met at society parties and events where Peev liked to go often. The victim had helped Valchinov by introducing him to the world of crypto investments, it is claimed.

The motive for the murder is believed to be related to money, possibly stemming from financial disputes or jealousy, although an investigation is still ongoing, police said.

Peev, who had both US and Bulgarian citizenship, was a wealthy man who had made his money from crypto investments. He had graduated from a university in the US and was known for being a regular attendee at society parties and events, and this is where he met his alleged killer, who worked as a bartender.

His social circle included friends whom he would take out to bars, and he had been involved in helping Vesco Valchinov, the alleged killer, with cryptocurrency-related business. This suggests that Peev had some level of financial success and was willing to assist others in the crypto industry.

Mr Peev was reported missing by his cousin on August 10, who said he had disappeared two days earlier. Therefore, the gruesome murder is believed to have happened on August 8 or 9. In a press conference on the case held by prosecutors and Bulgaria's Ministry of the Interior, it was revealed that investigators reached the scene of the crime after checking the two phones of the missing person.

They said: "All contacts he had on the day he was last seen were checked. One of them was with his friend Vesco Valchinov. A camera was seized from the block where the suspect lives and it was established that he and Christian entered the entrance in the late afternoon of August 8."

The next day, the suspected killer went out alone. He came home and went out again several times during the day. But Christian was not seen. Konstantin Subotinov allegedly helped the killer hide the dismembered corpse of the victim.

When the accomplice was detained, he admitted that he helped the killer to hide the parts of the victim's body by taking some of them with his car to Vitosha and burying them there. Valchinov was arrested after fleeing to a hotel in Vitosha, but his location was tracked on his phone and he was arrested on Sunday, August 13.
