As little Luna-Ann Forsyth recovers from her mauling by a huge savage dog, the scars on her face are a daily reminder of her horrific ordeal.

The brave four-year-old needed surgery and 40 stitches after the American bulldog-cross ripped a chunk out of her cheek in April, and will need several more operations to repair the damage. But the scars will never go away. Heartbreakingly, mum Amy Hobson says the youngster keeps asking: “Is this going to be on my face forever, Mummy?”

Amy, 32, feared her girl would die as the dog she described as “probably a bit bigger than a Shetland pony” ripped into Luna-Ann’s face. She had to punch and kick the beast to get it away from her girl. But the family were horrified to hear the dog is still being held in police kennels, with no decision on legal action.

Amy said: “He’s not been put down. It’s been four months and there’s been no decision, as far as I know. It’s crazy to have these huge dogs. We think it might be an American bulldog mixed with a great Dane, but the tests haven’t been done yet.” Joining the Mirror’s campaign for tougher action on owners and breeders of dangerous dogs, she said: “I want change. The law is failing right now.”

Amy of Nuneaton, Warks, told how her girl was attacked at a friend’s house where they had stopped off on their way home from a shopping trip. The dog was supposed to be shut in a bedroom but had got out and joined them in the living room where it attacked Luna-Ann. After fighting it off, Amy scooped up her daughter and stroked her blood-soaked hair off her face to see the wound.

She said: “Luna always talks about her face. I have to tell her, ‘It might fade but it’s never going to go away’. Me and her dad tell her all the time that she’s beautiful no matter what.” This week five-year-old Farrah-Leigh Nichol was maimed like Luna when a pocket bully sank its teeth into her cheek in Stockton-on-Tees, Teesside.

The American Bully breed, which includes XL Bullies, has now been linked to 14 deaths since 2021. It is claimed 44% of all reported dog attacks this year have been caused by bully type dogs. But ministers recently rejected calls to ban XL Bullies. Amy said: “The Government needs to start listening to the victims of these attacks.

The Mirror is campaigning for a “Jack Lis law”, named after the 10-year-old mauled to death by an XL Bully in Caerphilly, South Wales, in 2021. Warwickshire Police said enquiries continue over Luna-Ann’s attack and that Amy had been updated throughout.
