Matthew McConaughey and his son announce support of Maui residents after fires

Matthew McConaughey and his son, Levi, took to Instagram to announce their role in helping families in Maui after the recent wildfires on the island.

The wildfires on the island have ravaged in the past few days, burning down homes and businesses and killing 99 people so far.

"We know that you probably already know about all the devastation on the island of Maui," Matthew said in a video posted to the social media site, "The fires over there have put so many people out of home and have taken so many lives. These people need to stabilise to survive."

He added that he, his wife Camila, and his son Levi are working with Baby2Baby, a charity that collects donations of baby's and children's clothing and essentials. Celebrities like Jessica Alba, Kim Kardashian, and Meghan Markle have also worked with the charity over the years.

Matthew said in the video that Baby2Baby was working with charities in Maui such as the Aloha Diaper Bank, Hawaii Diaper Bank, Pacific Birth Collective, Maui Rapid Response, and the Maui Food Bank. "These are people, organisations, on the ground in Maui saying this is what is needed right now," he added.

"This is what people need right now. This is what the most needy people need," He added. He encouraged people to help, whether it's with Baby2Baby or through another organisation. At the end of the video, Levi finally spoke. "They're gonna need it for the long term. So any way you guys can help, it's appreciated," He said.

The caption shared what the McConaughey family was contributing, stating: "McConaughey's are funding an emergency aid plane with Baby2Baby that is filled with hundreds of thousands more emergency supplies that will have an immediate impact on children and families on Maui."

Matthew met Brazillian model Camila Alves in 2006, and the two married in 2012. Together they have three children, including Levi. This isn't the first time that Matthew has become involved with charity work. Matthew and Camila started the just keep livin' foundation, which according to the website: "implements after-school fitness and wellness programs in 40 inner-city high schools. Our prescription is to prevent so we don't have to cure later in life."

The actor has also become involved in politics. In 2022, Matthew spoke at the White House in a passionate 20-minute speech during a press briefing. He spoke about the Robb Elementary School shooting that happened that year in his hometown of Uvalde, Texas where 19 students and two teachers lost their lives. He said in his speech: "We need responsible gun ownership. We need background checks. We need to raise the minimum age to purchase an AR-15 rifle to 21. We need a waiting period for those rifles. We need red flag laws and consequences for those who abuse them."
