If there was even a single grain of truth in Rishi Sunak’s claim that the Tories are on the side of the people, he’d immediately cancel train station ticket office closures.

That he doesn’t is the latest proof he and his party neither listen nor care what the population really wants. More than twice as many voters oppose the ticket office shutterings as support them. It is a damning vote of no confidence.

Passengers who use the railway care. But so too do those who rarely go on trains yet recognise the elderly, disabled and vulnerable deserve the chance to be helped by a human and not thrown at the mercy of machines that too often are difficult to use. Sunak will pay a high price at the General Election for going off the rails.

Stop the death

The tragic drowning of six people after a small boat sank trying to cross the Channel from France is a grim toll. It also highlights the Tories’ inability to control Britain’s borders, halt the sailings and open safe and legal routes for those entitled to be given sanctuary.

Pernicious people smugglers are “running rings” around the Government, as Labour alleges. And saner Tories acknowledge the truth in this as the nasty rhetoric and PR stunts launched by Ministers backfire by emphasising their desperate failures.

Rishi Sunak’s pledge to “Stop the Boats” by the end of the year is no nearer to fulfilment than it was in January when he issued it. Judge the PM by his own goals and this promise is a terrible one.

Red daredevils

Some will call them brave, others will say they’re bonkers. Either way, it’s hard not to be impressed by the pair who scaled Blackpool Tower for a better view of the Red Arrows. With such a head for heights maybe the aerial stunt team should sign them up.
