Jason Momoa gives warning to Maui tourists as he says 'stop trespassing'

Jason Momoa has urged tourists not to visit Maui in the aftermath of the wildfires that have devastated areas on the island, as residents look to "heal, grieve and restore".

Wildfires swept through the island in Hawaii earlier this month, causing significant damage to the community and fatalities, notably in the town of Lāhainā. Some residents have been displaced and the death toll now stands at 93.

Some celebrities have expressed support, including Jason, 44. The actor - who was born on the neighbouring island of O'ahu - has been sharing information and resources about the wildfires with his followers on Instagram this week.

This has included Jason sharing resources about donating to the affected communities. He's shared several posts created by nonprofit organisation 'Āina Momona, which focuses on environmental health and sustainability.

Jason took to the platform on Friday to share a post by the organisation which urged people not to visit Maui for a vacation. It includes a slideshow of information and an accompanying caption which expressed gratitude for the support.

Slides in the recent post by the organisation read: "Do not travel to Maui. If you were planning on travelling to Maui in the near future, cancel your trip. The devastation from the wildfires will have a lasting island-wide impact on Maui's resources."

Further addressing the situation, the slideshow continued: "Our community needs time to heal, grieve and restore. That means the less visitors on the island taking up critical resources that have become extremely limited the better." It also read: "Stop trespassing through Lahaina."

It was stated that organisations are working with hotels in other parts of Hawaii to house displaced residents. Those wanting to aid the affected communities were advised to donate and provide support through volunteer groups.

The caption - which Jason used when he shared the post too - read: "Maui is not the place to have your vacation right now. Do not travel to Maui. Do not convince yourself that your presence is needed on an island that is suffering this deeply."

Jason reiterated the message on his Instagram Story on Saturday when he shared a post created by another account that read: "Should we cancel our trip to Maui?" He seemingly wrote in response to that in his post: "Yes."

The actor - who is known for his roles in films like Aquaman (2018) and Fast X (2023) - has since shared additional posts about the aftermath of the wildfires. This included a joint post with 'Āina Momona on the platform on Sunday.

The post included guidance on how people can support the affected communities from afar and again discouraged travelling to Maui. It instead encouraged people to donate to families in need and to continue to raise awareness.
