Madonna tried to tie the knot with Guy Ritchie in Princess Diana's iconic childhood home according to Earl Charles Spencer.

The aristocratic brother of the late royal has revealed details of a "surreal" telephone exchange with the chart-topping icon where she requested the use of Althorp House for her nuptials. The Spencer's childhood home appeared to have caught her eye when she made a very special request from Earl Spencer in the early 2000s.

The impressive Althorp estate comprises of 550 acres of land in West Northamptonshire, England, with the property itself encompassing 90 rooms adorned with fine furnishings and impressive interior design.Rumours of the Material Girl singer's desire to hold her big day at the historic estate originally surfaced in the early 00's when she was first engaged to movie director Guy.

Now speaking on The Rabbit Hole Detectives podcast, Earl Spencer confirmed that Madonna, 64, did indeed attempt to book the stately home as her wedding venue. He explained how he was at home cooking one day when the phone rang and when he answered it was the world famous chart star on the other end of the line.

He said: "The phone went and this voice said, 'Hello, it’s Madonna here'. I thought, 'Well, who on earth is this?', It’s too ridiculous."He continued: "I realised it was, and she said she wanted to get married... and use my house for the wedding. We had this rather surreal conversation where I was just thinking, 'This is beyond belief.'"

However despite their chat, Madonna and Guy, 54, ultimately held their lavish ceremony elsewhere at Skibo Castle located in the Scottish Highlands, with the day costing them an estimated $1.5million.

Earl Spencer added: "She then didn’t have the wedding with me, but at least we had that moment." On the day Madonna walked down the aisle dressed in a $170,000 Stella McCartney bridal gown, her maid of honour, Gwyneth Paltrow, joining her as she walked to the altar.

The pair tied the knot on December 22, 2000, the day after they christened their baby son Rocco at Dornoch Cathedral in Scotland. The couple - who had first got together in 1999 when they met via their mutual friends Sting and Trudie Styler - eventually split in 2008.

Althorp House currently operates as a wedding venue allowing couples with the budget to book the luxurious residence the opportunity to exchange their vows in one of five state rooms including the Picture Gallery, the State Dining Room, the Great Room, the Saloon, or the Marlborough Room.
