David Beckham sends message to Lionesses and word of advice for England star

The star of the Euro 2022 final told how she swapped England shirts with Becks and he gave her tips before she flew out to Australia for the Women's World Cup.

And he told her to always remember that the finals would be the 'highlight of her career'. When she scored against China, she received a well done text to wish the team all the best Down Under.

Beckham earned 115 caps - 58 as captain for six years - and she said: "He has been one of my idols since I was a little girl. It was amazing to meet him, he was really really nice and it was a pinch me moment in terms of women's sport.

"I was buzzing, everyone is a fan of the Beckhams and it was great to hear his daughter Harper was into the Lionesses."

She said of their encounter: "It was a completely World Cup focussed conversation, it was nice to hear how he felt in the moment of the World Cups and like everyone who played for England, it was the biggest highlight of his career; his best and biggest memories were in an England shirt.

"To come to a World Cup is something that I have dreamt of ever since I could remember."

He told her 'never lose sight of what you are doing' and how important it is to the nation.

"It is really cool because sometimes we are so in the moment that the impact you have is lost; he is a big fan of ours, we swapped England shirts but I think I was buzzing for his much more," Russo added.

"He messaged me after the China game. It was nice to know these players are following and enjoying the tournament and it is nice for us to meet our idols."
