A gunman has opened fire inside a library and police have rushed to the scene - and revealed the shooter and the victims are shockingly "all minors".

Police in Nashville are currently responding to shots fired at the Bordeaux Branch Library in Nashville, Tennessee - and the shooters are still at large.

Two people were shot, Nashville police told DailyMail.com, and the two suspects fired at them shortly before 4pm Thursday. Both victims were 'possibly known' to the shooters.

One of the targets was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, while the other was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the shooters are still at large. One was described as wearing a white t-shirt and grey shorts, and the other was in a hoodie and white tennis shoes.

There is a large police presence in the area. It is currently unknown what prompted the shooting or why the alleged suspects were in the Nashville library. The library branch will remain closed over the next two days as police investigate.

It comes as the US has seen the deadliest six months of mass killings recorded since at least 2006. From Jan. 1 to June 30, the nation endured 28 mass killings, all but one of which involved guns. The death toll rose just about every week, a constant cycle of violence and grief.

“What a ghastly milestone,” said Brent Leatherwood, whose three children were in class at a private Christian school in Nashville on March 27 when a former student killed three children and three adults. “You never think your family would be a part of a statistic like that.”

The incident involved a 28-year-old who killed six people, three of them children, in a shooting at a private Christian grade school in Nashville, Tennesee.

The shooter, Audrey Hale, who identified as a transgender man and was a former student at the private Christian school in Tennessee, was shot dead by police after the killing spree.

Police said the assailant did not target specific victims and was not on their radar before the attack.

Hale, who had no criminal history and lived with their parents in Nashville, was armed with two "assault-style" rifles and a pistol.
