Children's TV presenter Dave Benson Phillips has addressed a wild rumour that he was a member of the boyband One Direction.

The Celebrity MasterChef star has opened up on the strangest rumour he had ever heard about himself after scrolling through Wikipedia. The 58-year-old confessed he was looking at the free online encyclopedia, which is created by volunteers when he spotted he was listed as a fifth member of the X Factor group.

The band, made up of Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson Zayn Malik and Liam Payne, shot to worldwide stardom thanks to Simon Cowell's show. However, in some strange turn of events, Dave was listed as a member of the group. It wasn't the only ridiculous rumour to surround the comic.

He explained to Metro.co.uk: "I was also married to Natalie Imbruglia. That was the one where Mrs. Phillips actually said to me, 'Look, of all the rumours that you’ve ever had laid at your feet, that one’s not bad'. That one was lovely. A lot of the ones that have been written about me have been very strange and sometimes too strange to print."

Children's BBC star Dave rose to fame on the iconic 90s gameshow Get Your Own Back. He was a fan favourite on the show - that ran from 1991 to 2003 - which saw kids get revenge on adults by having them soaked in gloopy gunge. The star recently switched the TV sets for a boxing ring due to becoming a professional wrestler.

He told the Mirror in 2018: "Well, I was a Pontins Blue Coat and amongst my duties, I was asked to referee the wrestling. It was a huge amount of fun for the wrestlers because in those days I was the only black Blue Coat in Pontins. It was something of great entertainment and amusement for everyone and then once that season had finished I had the chance to go on a wrestling trip in Germany.

"I wasn’t wrestling out there and was usually the referee, but I was taught the rules and had to learn things pretty sharpish. I was very inquisitive and I let them practise holds on me and then I would practise some on them. I was very grateful for my time at Pontins but had always wanted to be a singer and performer."

Dave has put his wrestling moves to one side for now as he appears in Celebrity MasterChef, competing against other celebs to be crowned this year's winner. The celebrities will endure six weeks of gruelling culinary challenges under the watchful eyes of hosts John Torode and Gregg Wallace, as they decide who has what it takes to be crowned Celebrity MasterChef champion.

Battling it out in the kitchen this year is Strictly Come Dancing professional Dianne Buswell, alongside former contestant - and The Wanted singer - Max George. Love Island's Dani Dyer and Luca Bish, Emmerdale star Amy Walsh and The Inbetweeners star James Buckley are also amongst the line-up.
