Lucy Benjamin admits 'surprise' over Lisa return twist as she praises EastEnders

She's been filming hard-hitting storylines on EastEnders since 1998 and Lucy Benjamin is still surprised by what's in store for her iconic character Lisa Fowler on the BBC One soap. The legendary actress, 53, recently returned to Albert Square last month for a short comeback, where it was soon revealed that Lisa has a gambling addiction.

After blackmailing Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters) for money to help aid her gambling addiction, Lisa made a swift exit from Walford with granddaughter Peggy in tow, leaving Keanu devastated as he had hoped to spend more time with his daughter. Talking about her brief EastEnders return exclusively to the Mirror, Lucy admitted she was surprised over Lisa's gambling addiction twist and praised the "respectful" team for briefing her on the storyline.

Lucy said: "Chris Clenshaw [executive producer] called me and Rory Nugent, storyliner, called me. They're always so respectful, they always phone me and ask me if I like the sound of the storyline, would I be interested in playing it. I always love going back to EastEnders because they write so well for her and I get brilliant stuff to play.

"I was quite surprised she's got this gambling addiction but then, when you look at Lisa, you think actually none of it surprises me because she has been very troubled in her life and it's quite an easy path. Lisa is one of those people where trouble comes to her and she doesn't go looking for it... it lands on her doorstep. So when they told me about this current storyline, I was like: 'Yeah, bring it on!'"

The actress added: "I always get fabulous stuff to play for Lisa, she always gets brilliant storylines. Soaps in general, they do a really good job of being responsible when they have these kind of storylines. It's always really considered and very much researched. There is no greater honour than being given the responsibility of playing those kind of storylines and doing them justice.

"I want to serve a storyline well just because there are real people out there that are suffering these things and sometimes soaps can make a difference to these people that might be suffering in silence. Watching and connecting with a soap can often be the lifeline that they need."

Lucy is used to filming hard-hitting storylines for EastEnders and now the star is using her platform to explore the pitfalls of reality TV, fast fame and social media in new movie Look To The Light. The actress is starring as pushy mum, Elaine, in the film from Christopher Manoe, which follows wannabe influencer Eddie, played by Charlie Goddard, as he chases fast fame at the cost of his personal life and moral integrity.

In new movie, Look To The Light, Lucy is starring alongside the likes of Barbie star Charlie Goddard, singer Kele le Roc, Brookside's Mark Moraghan and Corrie's Sharon Duce. Lucy said of her busy schedule: "I have the best of both worlds, I get to pop back to EastEnders, here and there, then I can go off and do other bits and pieces, other projects. I like the way that all works at the moment."
