Coronation Street star Daniel Brocklebank has taken a subtle swipe at under fire former co-star Catherine Tyldesley after a party planner working on her behalf was accused of asking a baker for free cake.

The 43-year-old soap star has played Billy Mayhew on Corrie since 2014, while 39-year-old Cath played Eva Price from 2011 until 2018. Despite playing characters on the ITV soap for many years together, a hint of a feud between the pair has been exposed thanks to a cryptic post shared by Daniel online.

Earlier this month, Cath found herself engulfed in a scandal when the owner of Three Little Birds bakery in Keighley, West Yorkshire, claimed they were approached by a marketing company called NVRLND asking for 102 cakes in exchange for social media plugging by a TV star and a reference in OK! Magazine. Owner Rebecca Severs won praise when she responded to the request in a now-viral email as she declared social media posts and coverage in a glossy magazine would not pay her mortgage or pay her staff so she refused the deal.

Catherine was later she was reported as the celebrity at the centre of the cake gate scandal. And while the TV star has claimed she was oblivious that a party planning company had pitched the deal on her behalf, she has continued to be under fire due to her “tone deaf” response where took a dig at Rebecca and her business.

Now Daniel has poured fuel on the fire with a post he shared on Twitter. He wrote on Tuesday: “Support small, family run, local businesses & restaurants as much as possible” - along with a red heart emoji. The unprovoked statement caused a stir online, with many questioning if he was making reference to the Three Little Bird scandal. Many followers rushed to side with Dan and his opinion, with one writing: “I agree… it’s the small little bars and Cafes that need us…” While another wrote: “Always a nice thing to do.”

Catherine released a video statement on social media last week. But the footage blew up in her face as she was accused of being disingenuous with her statement.

The star pleaded: “I had no idea those emails were being sent. I'm not working with the lovely OK! Magazine on anything that I'm aware of and NVRLAND are an amazing company. They've supplied me with performers in the past. They're insane and they've been completely misrepresented in this matter. Utterly bizarre.”

She added: “I mean I hope the cake lady got the exposure she was craving" – with this particular comment grating with many of her own fans. One posted a scathing reaction via Twitter, writing: “The response from Catherine Tyldesley was SO tone deaf that she deserves to be absolutely rinsed. Good on the baker for sticking up for herself!”

Another blasted the TV star, writing: “she grabs her phone and rants away believing herself to be the victim of this farce, revealing her own identity and has the temerity to call out the bakery for ‘craving exposure’.” And another sarcastically wrote: "I hope Catherine Tyldesley is happy with the exposure she received after her tone deaf response."
