Major League Baseball has suspended Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson for six games for throwing punches at Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez. Ramirez was suspended for three games in return.

MLB released both players' punishments for their involvement in the brawl, which took place last Saturday night. Both major leaguers are also appealing fines bestowed upon them for an undisclosed amount.

White Sox manager Pedro Grifol and Guardians manager Terry Francona received one-game suspensions for their involvement. Guardians third base coach Mike Sarbaugh has also received a one-game suspension.

Reports suggest that Grifol, Francona, and Clase all served their suspension on Monday. Sarbaugh will serve his on Tuesday when the Guardians take on the Toronto Blue Jays at Progressive Field.

Francona addressed the media, saying that he hopes Ramirez’s penalty is softened because he is a good player. This season, the third baseman is batting .289 with 18 home runs and 65 RBI.

"He's going to appeal," he said. "My hope is that he always can lower it because he's such a good player. I thought they seemed to me to be extremely conscientious in what they were doing, at least when I talked to them.

"If you're the home team or you want your guys to get none, you want them to get 20. That's probably not the way it's going to work."

The White Sox and Guardians brawl escalation started during a game on July 27. Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor mocked the celebration of ex-White Sox player Jake Burger, who was traded to the Miami Marlins before the Aug. 1 MLB Trade Deadline.

Sources indicated that Anderson didn’t appreciate the gesture, taking it as a sign of disrespect. He carried his feelings into the subsequent matchups of their three-game series, intensifying his trash-talking toward his opponents.

Ramirez slid into second base, with Anderson attempting to tag him out. Anderson stood over him with Ramirez underneath his legs, adding more fuel to the fire.

Visibly angry, Ramirez had words for Anderson, which led to both players taking off their gloves and throwing punches. Anderson, who started the brawl, got the worst of the punches, falling to the ground after a right hook.

Since the incident, Ramirez has indicated that he tried to reach out to Anderson to apologize to him for the fight. He told an MLB insider that Anderson didn’t respond to the message.

"In light of the recent events, I want to say to the public that I deeply regret what happened between me and Tim Anderson, whom I consider a very good baseball player. I’ve been trying to reach out to him directly and apologize but haven’t received an answer.

“Everyone who knows me knows well I’m not somebody who’s out there looking for trouble. It’s been part of my personality and behavior to give 100% every day at the field to help my team and try to be an example for the younger players on my team.”

“I want to reiterate apologies for my behavior, and as always, my goal is to help my team to win and reach the postseason. I want to thank everybody in my organization, my teammates, and all my fans for their support during this process".
