Tennessee Titans Head Coach Mike Vrabel has announced that defensive line coach Terrell Williams will be the head coach for their preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

Vrabel noted that placing Williams in charge of the game would be a good opportunity for himself and the organization. He also listed his reasoning as "just something I wanted to do" as he explained the unusual move.

"Terrell Williams will act as the head coach at Chicago starting on Friday," said Vrabel to the media. "This is a good opportunity for him, us [the Titans staff], and everybody involved.

"Big T will handle that. Clinton [McMillan] will handle the defensive line on Friday. [Williams] will talk to you [the media] after the game, and I'll come back on Sunday."

McMillian is listed on the Titans coaching staff website as a defensive assistant. Williams is listed as a defensive lineman coach and the assistant head coach.

The NFL has reported that Vrabel will still be in attendance for the game and help the Titans prepare for the preseason matchup; he just won't be leading the team, allowing Williams to call the game.

As the press conference continued, Vrabel detailed the tasks that Williams would focus on during the preparation for the game. "I think that him dealing with and talking to the trainer, and again we will have a lot of conversations between now and Friday, but just handling things with the roster and discussing those things with the assistant coaches," Vrabel explained.

"How we want to play the game, let him make those decisions in the game. We'll go into the game with things we think we need to try and get done, and I'll help him where need be. I think it will be a great opportunity. Well deserved."

Williams first joined the Titans in 2018 as a defensive line coach. Before his current team, he held the same role at the Miami Dolphins from 2015 to 2017 and with the Las Vegas Raiders from 2012 to 2014.

Williams began his career as a coach in 1998 with Fort Scott Community College in Kansas. He progressed through the collegiate ranks, landing the role with more prominent college programs such as North Carolina A&T, Youngstown State, Akron, Purdue, and Texas A&M.

Williams has 26 years of coaching experience at the college and NFL levels but has never been a head coach. His highest coaching rank came this offseason when the Titans promoted him to assistant coach.

The 49-year-old's promotion was most likely due to the individual success of players on the defensive line. Despite going undrafted in their respective NFL Draft classes, the Titans have seen Teair Tart, Naquan Jones, and Jayden Peevy earn spots on the line.

The Titans will face the Bears in an away preseason matchup on Aug 12 at Soldier Field.
