Monday's game was filled with drama - with star player Lauren James being sent off with a red card after she viciously attacked an opponent. The 21-year-old Chelsea player brutally stamped on Nigerian player Michelle Alozie sparking furore.

Lauren was compared to David Beckham following her unsportly behaviour - as the ageing former footballer got a red card himself in 1998 when he kicked an Argentinian player during a World Cup match. Gary Lineker made the connection as he watched the women playing, tweeting: "The @Lionesses down to 10 as Lauren James has a Beckhamesque moment of madness."

Monday's result means England now advance to the quarter-final stage of the 2023 Women's World Cup. While their oponent is yet to be decided, Japan, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands have so far also qualified for the next rounds.

The next England game will take place this Saturday 12 August at Stadium Australia, Sydney. The team will either face Colombia or Jamaica - depending which of the two teams win in a play off tomorrow.
