Convicted paedophile Ian Watkins ' injuries are not life-threatening after he was attacked in Wakefield prison, police have said.

Watkins, who is serving a 29-year sentence for multiple sex crimes including offences against young children and babies, was rushed to hospital after being taken hostage and battered on Saturday, the Mirror revealed on Saturday. West Yorkshire Police gave an update on Watkins' condition today.

The force statement said: "West Yorkshire Police were notified by staff at HMP Wakefield of an assault on a prisoner on the afternoon of Saturday, 5 August. He was taken to hospital where his injuries are not understood to be life-threatening. Enquiries are ongoing."

It is understood Watkins was taken hostage by three other inmates - two thought to be known to be "killers" - shortly after 9am on Saturday morning. He is said to have suffered stab wounds and beatings before eventually being freed by prison officers around six hours later. It's claimed jealousy over Watkins giving guitar lessons to other inmates was part of the motivation for the attack.

Witnesses said paramedics worked to save his life in an ambulance outside the jail. A Prison Service spokesperson told the Mirror over the weekend: "Police are investigating an incident which took place on Saturday at HMP Wakefield. We are unable to comment further while the police investigate."

In 2013, Watkins pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court to 13 child sex offences. He also admitted to the rape and sexual assault of a child who was under the age of 13. Watkins pleaded guilty to conspiring to rape a child, three counts of sexual assault involving children, seven involving taking, making or possessing indecent images of children and one of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving a sex act on an animal. On 27 November, the day after his guilty plea had been accepted by the prosecution, Watkins referred to his sex offences as "mega lolz" in a recorded phone call to a female fan made from HM Prison Parc.

Justice John Royce sentenced Watkins to 29 years in prison on 18 December 2013, saying Watkins had a "corrupting influence" and had shown a "complete lack of remorse". He added Watkins posed a significant risk to the public in particular to women with young children.

After sentencing, Watkins transferred from HM Prison Parc, where he had been incarcerated while on remand, to HM Prison Wakefield to begin serving his sentence. The institution is often dubbed the "Monster Mansion" due to the large number of high-profile, high-risk sex offenders and murderers held there.

Watkins was transferred to HM Prison Long Lartin on 25 January 2014 in order to be closer to his mother after she underwent a kidney transplant. The disgraced star was back at Wakefield Prison by March 2018, one year on from being accused of grooming a young mother through a series of letters sent from prison.
