Pep Guardiola has not ruled out taking his Manchester City reign to 10 years and beyond.

There were suggestions that the City boss would consider walking away from the final two years of his contract this summer if the Blues completed a Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup Treble last season because his mission would be complete.

But Guardiola insists he is going into the Community Shield clash with Arsenal with the same hunger he had when he first arrived at the Etihad seven years ago. And he also hinted that he will extend his contract past the summer of 2025 if he still feels the same way next year.

Guardiola said: “I signed a contract for another two years because I feel comfortable - and nothing has changed whether we won (the treble) or didn’t win. I am happy and the people are happy, the board and the hierarchy especially, because they decide in the end which manager is going to lead this group of players.

“If they are satisfied, I am still satisfied. I want to defend what we won and maybe at the end of the season, if I am tired, we will talk with the club - or maybe extend more.”

He added: “Of course, it was a good summer because of the fact we did it. In the first game of the Champions League they will no longer ask me if we have to win it and this kind of stuff.

“When the competition starts we work a lot. Yesterday it was Arsenal, Arsenal, Arsenal. It’s the competition that puts you in this position.

“In the summertime you relax while other people work for the club to find what we need. But the moment the competition is here, the warnings are there and the players are there. It’s not a big effort.”

City have qualified for a newly-expanded Club World Cup to be staged in the United States in the summer of 2025 - and it would be a tantalising prospect for Guardiola to lead his team into the tournament.

He is looking to become the first manager to win four successive titles. And Guardiola has also got the European Super Cup and Club World Cup in his sights this season.

The Catalan spent four years with Barcelona and three seasons with Bayern Munich before arriving in Manchester in 2016. He has won five titles in the last six seasons, as well as the Champions League, two FA Cups and four EFL Cups.
