Family announces cause of death of Goldman Sachs banker found floating in creek
Mystery still remains around the deaths of two young men found dead in a New York creek weeks apart after leaving the same venue.
This is despite the family of John Castic, the latest person to be found in the waters of Newtown Creek, confirming that his cause of death was drowning. The Goldman Sachs analyst was last seen Saturday July 29 at about 2.30 am leaving a ‘Zeds Dead’ concert at The Brooklyn Mirage in East Williamsburg.
His body was pulled from the waters of Newtown Creek on Tuesday - a waterway around a half mile from the Brooklyn Mirage. The section of the creek where the grim find was made is called English Kills.
His dad Jeffrey Castic told the New York Post his son's “official cause of death is drowning.”
The distraught dad described his son as a “bright, charismatic young man” who “had lots of friends and loved to travel.” John was spotted on CCTV walking along Stewart Avenue not far from where his body was recovered.
Nicola Bulley's children 'cried their eyes out' after being told 'mummy's lost'The medical examiner's report has yet been officially released with a spokesperson saying toxicology reports are still pending.
The family has said they have been given no indication that foul play was involved in John's death.
“Right now we’re just focusing on the fact that in 27 years, he has impacted a lot of people,” his dad said.
“We’re just trying to honour his life. We’re trying to move past all of that now – you know, it’s not easy.”
A statement from the NYPD reads: "On Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at approximately 1109 hours, police responded to a 911 call of an aided individual in the Newtown Creek located in the vicinity of 1100 Grand Street, within the confines of the 90 Precinct.
"Upon arrival, officers observed an unidentified and unconscious male floating in the water. NYPD Harbor units removed the aided male from the water.
"EMS also responded to the location and pronounced the aided male deceased on scene."
Mr Castic's is the second body pulled out of the Creek in recent months. Karl Clemente went missing after leaving the same Brooklyn club and was discovered in a stream behind a neighbouring warehouse just days after he was reported missing.
The psychologist had turned up at the same Brooklyn Mirage on June 11, but was turned away because staff said he had been drinking. CCTV showed Mr Clemente walking toward a nearby petrol station, while other footage allegedly showed him running down Metropolitan Avenue moments later.
“Why was he running?” his dad Alex Clemente told Fox News. “Someone was chasing him. There’s something fishy here.”

With two young men leaving the same club and ending up dead in the same creek just weeks apart, many began asking questions. Despite this, the New York Police Department have said the two deaths are not connected.
