In August of 2002, television was changed forever with the premiere of The OC.

The short-lived soap opera-esque show hooked teenage girls immediately. It's set in Orange County, California, where the name of the show comes from. It starred Mischa Barton, Ben McKenzie, Adam Brody, and Rachel Bilson among other ensemble cast members.

The show has a loyal legion of fans, which was evident when the show was cancelled in 2007. After the announcement, an online petition was posted and gained over 700,000 signatures to keep the show going. Against their best efforts, the show was cancelled, but it still lives on.

Here are the most iconic moments that fans will always remember. Read with caution, spoilers ahead.

When Marissa first meets Ryan

The moment in the pilot where the tumultuous relationship all started. The trope of the bad boy and the spoiled rich girl tugged on all our heartstrings. And when Ryan said: "Whoever you want me to be" when Marissa asked who he was, viewers were instantly rooting for the two to end up together forever.

Kirsten's intervention

A moment where fans shed a tear was during Kirsten's intervention. Her drinking caused her to wreck her car and almost destroyed her marriage. Her family staged an intervention after her husband found a bottle of vodka in her purse after she promised to quit drinking. At first, she was resistant and defensive, but once her sons Seth and Ryan started begging their mother to get help, she does.

Julie and Luke's storyline

When Luke yells: "Welcome to the O.C., b***h," it deserved its own iconic moment. But Luke hooking up with his ex-girlfriend's mum is a bit more memorable. Luke previously dated Marissa and ended up sleeping with her mum, Julie. You could hear a pin drop when Luke later told Ryan: "I'm done having sex with Julie Cooper" just as Marissa walked in the room.

Chrismukkah

The adorable holiday created by five-year-old Seth combined his mum and dad's two religions and the family has been celebrating ever since. Seth tells Ryan in series one that the holiday combines "the best that Christianity and Judaism have to offer". Plus it includes "eight days of presents, followed by one day of many presents".

The Spider-Man kiss

After Spider-Man came out in 2002, teenagers around the world wished to be Kirsten Dunst kissing Tobey Maguire's Spiderman as he hung upside down. The OC recreated this dream when Summer went to Seth's house in the pouring rain to find him, dressed as Spider-Man of course, hanging upside down after trying to fix the satellite dish on the roof. Cue swoons.

Seth and Summer's relationship becomes official

Summer was the mean, popular girl, so of course she didn't want to publicly admit that she was dating nerdy Seth. They started dating in secret, no matter how badly Seth wanted to scream about their relationship from the rooftops. Eventually, he did, reaching his breaking point and climbing on a coffee cart, declaring his love for Summer and yelling: "Acknowledge me now, or lose me forever!" Fans cheered when Summer ran up to kiss him.

The bagel slicer

Every TV show needs a TV dad, and Sandy Cohen took the cake. Or the bagel. Armed with his trusty bagel slicer, whenever anyone needed comfort, Sandy was there to offer bagels and advice. His wife Kirsten said her husband was "an artist with cream cheese," and we can all agree.

Marissa shoots Trey and becomes an SNL sketch

Marissa sees Ryan and Trey fighting in the season two finale, causing her to pick up Trey's gun and shoot him as Imogen Heap's "Hide And Seek" played in the background. The hyper-dramatic scene led to Saturday Night Live parodying it in the Dear Sister sketch, where Bill Hader and Andy Samberg shoot each other with "mmm whatcha say" playing in the background.

Marissa's death

Mischa Barton, who played the character, admitted that Marissa "has been through so, so much and there's really nothing left for her to do." Even so, fans were caught off guard as at the end of series three, Marissa and Ryan got into a car accident, with only one of them coming out alive.

Seth and Summer's Wedding

After the sadness of the series three finale, the series four finale, and the show's final episode, ended with a wedding. Seth and Summer finally get married, with Ryan as Seth's best man. It was everything fans had wanted, and the perfect ending to an iconic show.
