Actress Nina Wadia has recalled the moment she was most shocked to be asked for a selfie - the moment she was in labour and about to give birth.

The 54-year-old TV star is most famous for playing Zainab Masood in BBC soap EastEnders from 2007 until 2013 and appearing in iconic BBC sketch show Goodness Gracious Me from 1998 until 2015. She was also a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing in 2021 where she was paired with Neil Jones - but faced the indignity of being the first pair to be voted off the show that year.

The star has been married to composer Raiomond Mirza since 1998 and together they share a 16-year-old son named Aidan and a 19-year-old daughter named Tia. But it seems when her son was arriving into the world, an overzealous fan was almost there for the birth too.

Nina has explained that she had to refuse someone a photo as she was being rushed to medics while in labour. And hitting out at the moment, the star said it was “unusual” that the fan didn’t consider how inappropriate they were being.

She told the Daily Star: “The strangest place I’ve been recognised was when I was giving birth. They asked for a selfie. It was really odd timing. It was a slightly strange sensation.

"It was a very unusual time to ask. It’s not a good thing to happen when you’re mid-delivery!”

Earlier this year, Nina explained that she developed anxiety-induced insomnia when she first had her children. She explained that during her worst bouts of the condition, she would end up grabbing only two hours sleep per night.

She said: "I wish somebody had told me when I decided to have a family that I'd never sleep again. The night is where my anxiety lies because I'm a worrier. If an issue or a problem is upsetting me, I will not sleep until I find a solution and a lot of times, that solution doesn't exist.

"First, Tia had colic for three years, so I'd lie awake all night worrying about that. Over the years, I'd wake 15 or 20 times because of restlessness rooted in stress over everything in my life from my house to my career."

The TV star has had further stressful family issues in recent years relating to her son. Back in 2017, Aidan collapsed on the flight home from Thailand and was subsequently diagnosed him with Type 1 diabetes. Ever since, Aidan has needed to administer insulin seven to 11 times a day to prevent him from having a fatal hypoglycaemic attack.

Nina explained: "For the first two years of his life, before we got a Dexcom G6, which sounds an alarm when Aidan's insulin levels drop, I never slept more than two hours a night and that was broken sleep.

"I'm quite an anxious person and fret about everyone's wellbeing, so when this happened to Aidan those worries reached new heights. I'd lie awake wondering if he would have an attack and go into his room every three hours to prick his finger and check his blood glucose levels."
