Castleford have tonight sacked coach Andy Last after a 28-0 home defeat to Huddersfield left them bottom of Super League.

The club's board acted swiftly after yet another loss left them staring at a huge relegation fight. Wakefield have held up the rest of the competition for most of the year but have crucially found form of late. A win at Hull on Sunday would see them pull two points clear of nosediving Castleford, who won just four games from 19 outings under Last's command.

The ex-Hull FC No2 was promoted from assistant when Lee Radford was sacked just three games into this campaign but has struggled to get performances out of a misfiring squad and there is a genuine fear they could be doomed for the Championship.

With just six fixtures remaining, Castleford's next game is a massive clash with Wakefield on August 18. England assistant Last becomes the second coach to be axed in six days after Daryl Powell - who Radford replaced at Wheldon Road - was given the boot by Warrington.

Last didn't attended the post-match press conference after another dismal showing and just after 11pm, Castleford issued a brief 24-word statement. It read: "Castleford Tigers can confirm that Andy Last has departed the club with immediate effect. The club will make a further statement after the weekend."
