Carefree Rishi Sunak laughs and smiles in California - thousands of miles away from his home in the UK which was targeted by eco-protestors yesterday.

The Prime Minister was snapped playing arcade games with his wife Akshata Murty and their daughters Krishna, 12, and ten-year-old Anoushka on Santa Monica Pier in California today. Hours previous, Mr Sunak's £2million pad in his Richmond constituency, North Yorkshire, became the latest venue for climate campaigners.

Photographs showed Greenpeace activists on the roof of the mansion, which activists blanketed in black fabric after the Prime Minister announced plans for more oil and gas exploration in the North Sea. Five protesters were arrested on Thursday.

But despite the climate change concerns, Mr Sunak, 43, had already jetted off across the Atlantic to California for his family holiday. He was pictured walking down the popular beachfront and frolicking with his wife and children on the pier.

The PM, who was not at home at the time of the stunt, had said the ten-day US getaway would be a "really special" trip after a few years without a "proper" family summer holiday. He is expected to spend the week and a half trawling down the West Coast of the United States, stopping off at Disneyland on the way.

Speaking in the build-up to the holiday, Mr Sunak said his daughters were "very excited" about going to Disneyland before joking that they feared they would spend too much time at the Star Wars experience because he such a mega fan.

In photographs for which the family posed on the pier, the relaxed PM is seen wearing a grey long sleeve top and navy shorts, paired with espadrilles.

But while Mr Sunak has been soaking the sun abroad, the Bank of England raised interest rates for the fourteenth time in a row, pushing up mortgages for millions of homeowners. The base rate this afternoon went up from 5 per cent to 5.25 per cent- as widely expected by analysts - taking it to a new 15-year high. The last time interest rates in the UK were at 5.25 per cent was in April 2008 - they were cut that month to 5 per cent.

Borrowing will therefore become yet more expensive here and millions of homeowners have seen their monthly mortgage costs skyrocket off the back of consecutive rises.

The Sunaks, who live at No10, own several houses, including the mansion in Yorkshire and a mews house in wealthy Earl's Court in central London.

And the family's holiday takes Mr Sunak back to the US. He studied at Stanford University in California, where he met his wife. The pair continued to live there while he worked for a hedge fund. He later worked as an analyst for the investment bank Goldman Sachs for three years.

His stance on the major expansion of North Sea oil and gas drilling has angered several quarters, including Greenpace who said it had to carry out the action at the North Yorkshire property. A banner featuring the words "Rishi Sunak - Oil Profits or Our Future?" was unfurled at the address.

The group claimed they knocked on the door upon their arrival and said: "This is a peaceful protest." Activists then scaled the building to its roof.

North Yorkshire Police initially said that two men and two women had been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and public nuisance. The force later added that a fifth man had been been arrested on suspicion of causing public nuisance.

All were released on bail pending further inquiries on Friday morning.
