If your Sky TV bill is making you wince then you might want to try a clever tactic spotted by one savvy customer of the sattelitte telly firm. Journalist Sam Cooper, who writes for Nottinghamshire Live, was about to be hit by a massive price hike due to his current contract coming to an end.

Knowing that things were about to rocket overnight from £81.50 per month to a whopping £168.49, he began checking out deals Sky was offering its new customers. To his shock, he found hugely discounted rates clearly aimed at enticing people to switch over to the telly firm.

Of course, this is not unusual. Like most suppliers, Sky often has bargain deals for those joining the firm whilst existing users sometimes find they get left out in the cold and end up paying higher fees.

Having taken a trip to his local shopping centre and seeing some of the price cuts Sky had in its store, Sam said he felt the need to try and negotiate a better deal.

"My contract price used to be £81.50 which included the full Sky Q TV package except for Sky Sports, multiroom, Sky's Superfast Broadband. When I checked my future bills, this was due to jump to a truly eye-watering £168.49 once the contract and all of the marvellous offers loaded onto the account came to an end."

However, instead of picking up the phone and spending ages waiting to get through to an agent, Sam tried a different tactic and opted for Sky's text service instead.

Thanks to an instant connection made via Facebook Messenger (you can also use the live chat on Sky's website), Sam was able to send a note that said he wanted to cancel and it wasn't long before Sky's chatbot had patched him through to a 'loyalty expert'.

After around 10 minutes online and with screenshots of the deals Sam had spotted sent to Sky, the firm came back with a new offer of £93.50 per month - that's a saving of over £65 on the price he was about to be faced with.

"Had we not contacted Sky, our monthly package price of £168.49 would simply have not been affordable," Sam added.

If you are currently in a contract there's nothing you can do to reduce your bills as you'll be tied to that specific deal but it's worth checking to see when your bundle ends.

If your price plan is stopping soon then start doing some research about how much things are rising by and what new deals Sky is offering.

For those that don't want to pick up the phone and speak to an agent it appears Sky's chat function works just as well and sending a few text messages could seriously slash your bills.
