Former This Morning star Dr Ranj Singh slammed "anti-vax plonkers" on social media on Tuesday night as he revealed a recent trip to hospital for medical treatment. The doctor hit back at those speculating about his health as he paid tribute to the NHS for looking after him.

Dr Ranj's health update follows the star being forced to pull out of a scheduled appearance on Morning Live earlier that day, where the doctor had been due to host a section on norovirus. Presenter Gethin Jones announced to viewers Dr Xand – Alexander van Tulleken – would be standing in for Dr Ranj who wasn't "feeling very well".

Gethin told BBC viewers: "Dr Ranj was meant to be here today but unfortunately he is not feeling so well so Dr Xand is joining us from the set of Operation." The Welsh presenter then went on to chat with Dr Xand, telling him: "Thank you for stepping in for Dr Ranj today" before discussing how the cases of norovirus are increasing on cruise ships.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday night, Dr Ranj urged those engaging in conspiracy theories regarding vaccinations to "give their heads a wobble" as he addressed his health scare with his 347,000 followers. The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant captioned a screenshot from his Instagram Stories: "FYI… for the anti-vax plonkers on here. Honestly, give your heads a wobble."

The statement from the Morning Live star reads: "A little health update... Unfortunately I had dehydration after a bout of food poisoning. Luckily I got great care from our NHS and was discharged home after some fluids to recover! Unfortunately there are some absolute plonkers on social media (Twitter) who think my recent hospital stay was something to do with vaccines. It wasn't. Honestly, get a grip!"

Morning Live's resident medical expert quit Elon Musk's Twitter last month, telling his followers on July 6: "I think it’s finally time to say goodbye to Twitter… It started off as such a fun place, but it’s become horribly unkind. I’ll still have this account but won’t be posting/engaging anymore. Catch me over on Insta (where it’s much nicer)!"

Dr Ranj, who worked on This Morning for six years before quitting in 2022, recently appeared on Morning Live to help host an insightful segment with Jonnie Irwin regarding misconceptions about hospices and palliative care. Jonnie shared last year how he is unsure how long he has left to live, after being diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2020, which has since spread to his brain.

Speaking from a hospice via video link last month, Jonnie told Morning Live viewers: "I've been using palliative care for three years." Palliative care is the medical caregiving approach aimed at optimising quality of life and mitigating suffering among people with serious, complex, and often terminal illnesses.

Jonnie continued to clear up some of the misconceptions about palliative care, saying: "It's the care you're given when doctors think you won't recover - I've been in palliative care since day one, when I got my diagnosis. It can take many guises - from hospital visits and chemotherapy all the way to the hospice."

Jonnie added how the staff in the private hospice he is staying in have been "amazing" before Dr Ranj Singh further educated BBC viewers on palliative care - explaining how the redirection of care can "go on for years or just days - it depends on the individual situation".

"Well done Jonnie Irwin. Best description of palliative care and how it’s funded I’ve heard in a long time," one BBC viewer wrote on Twitter after the segment aired this morning. Another tweeted the Morning Live Twitter account, penning: "Watching your piece on palliative care this morning, My husband was diagnosed in April last year we were given a palliative care nurse immediately and without her and the Hospice ( were he died in December) we would never have coped."
