Anton Du Beke gave a teary tribute to his father-in-law as he revealed the special role he played in his life. The Strictly Come Dancing star, 57, opened up about his own childhood and becoming a father himself in a candid interview.

He shared how his wife Hannah Summers' dad was "all he needed" when looking for guidance on how to become a good father. It comes after the professional dancer revealed he had an abusive childhood and was stabbed by his own dad on Boxing Day. Talking to presenter Kate Garraway as part of Life Stories on ITV, Anton recalled how he was stabbed in the leg and stomach by his father who hated his love of dancing and performing.

Anton explained: "I got stabbed in the leg and in the stomach because of a fight on Boxing Day. It was idiotic. An idiotic situation. I remember walking out of the house to walk up to the hospital, holding my leg, and a police car drove past and I waved him down. And I said ‘he’s in there with a knife’ – anyway they carted him off and I ended up in hospital for three or four days. You’ve got an alcoholic father and a situation where, if you’re in the house and he’s drinking, you end up with the fights and stuff. You’d move room to get away from it and he’d follow you in and then the violence starts."

During the interview, Anton was asked what he now thinks of his own father now he has become a dad. He replied: "Oh I don't think about it! I never give it a second thought about what he missed out on." Kate added: "So you're trying to be something different from him?", to which Anton repeated: "No no I'm not. I don't give it a moments thought."

Before adding: "If I need a role model of how to be a great father I look at my father-in-law. What a guy, what a man, that's all you need! If I need an example of what it's all about I just look to him." The cameras then panned to his father-in-law as he broke down in tears watching the interview. As the professional dancer was talking, Anton's voice also started to wobble.

Whilst his relationship with his father isn't strong, Anton then opened up about his relationship with his mum, Ascensión, explaining how she had supported him through the toughest of times and had always backed his dream of becoming a professional dancer one day.

He explained: "She funded everything. I had nothing. I left school – I didn’t take a single exam. No academic qualifications whatsoever. The mantra in our house was to get a job and work. Mum would prop me up financially, I’d turn up with a cheque for my lesson." Anton's two children George and Henrietta, surprised him with a sweet message on the show.

The twins appeared on screen with a lovely message to their dad. Henrietta said: "Hi Daddy!" to which George added: "We really love you" with Henrietta signing off with: "And we like your dancing a lot!" Anton was left in tears over the sweet message with his wife, Hannah, also emotional in the audience.
