Harry Styles reflects on 'complete privilege' of being painted by David Hockney

Harry Styles has been painted by world renowned artist David Hockney during an intimate session.

The former One Direction member who wore a striped white and orange cardigan over a white shirt for the activity late last May, along with a string of pearls around his neck and blue jeans. He sat with the 87-year-old as he sketched and painted him.

David admitted that he had no idea who Harry was despite being the first man to appear solo on the cover of Vogue and have various accolades to his name, including six Brit Awards, three Grammy Awards, an Ivor Novello Award, and three American Music Awards. He admitted: "I wasn’t really aware of his celebrity then. He was just another person who came to the studio.”

Harry had travelled to David's studio in Normandy and spent two days as the artist captured his likeness in the new portrait. Speaking to Vogue magazine about the opportunity, he said: "David Hockney has been reinventing the way we look at the world for decades. It was a complete privilege to be painted by him.”

Harry's portrait will hang alongside David's portraits of writer Gregory Evans, Hockney's printer Maurice Payne, the mayor of his local town Dozulé, his gardener and his chiropodist. The exhibition opens on November 2 and will go on Wednesday.

The special painting comes after Harry was commemorated by Adidas, who have given its blessing to a nickname for its Gazelle trainers in honour of the singer. The sports brand has changed its online description of the shoe to acknowledge them as ‘Satellite Stompers’ after Harry wore them non-stop during his Love on Tour shows.

Fans came up with the nickname after taking inspiration from the former One Direction star’s single, Satellite. Adidas’ website now says of the shoes: “With its ability to elevate any ensemble, the Adidas Gazelle has become a staple in Harry Styles’ wardrobe, leaving a lasting impression on his dedicated fans, who affectionately refer to them as ‘Satellite Stompers’.”

The firm hopes recognising the name will help to boost sales – and it has also expressed an interest in making things more formal with Harry, 29. A source said: “A collab between Adidas and Harry is a no-brainer. Having his limited edition designs on Gazelles would be a sell-out. Harry would be the perfect signing after the brand got damaged by the Kanye West scandal.”
