First look at Netflix's Sex Education season 4 as series set to come to an end

Netflix have given the first look at the upcoming and final series of hit show Sex Education. Lead characters Otis Milburn (Asa Butterfield), Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey) and Eric Effiong (Doctor Who's Ncuti Gatwa) all return for the fourth instalment of the award-winning comedy-drama.

Also appearing alongside series regulars like Dr Jean (Gillian Anderson), Aimee Gibbs (Aimee-Lou Wood), and Adam Groff (Connor Swindells) is Emmy award winning actor and Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy, a new character for the show's final outing. The fourth and final season of Sex Education arrives on Netflix on September 21, 2023 and promises to be the best one yet.

The streaming giant have given a preview of what to expect in the upcoming series as Otis and Eric, along with the rest of Moordale's students face a new frontier – their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. In the pictures shared by Netflix, the best friends can be seen laughing together outside their new school.

Both characters haven't changed much since series three in terms of appearance as Otis still wears his iconic blue, red and white coat and Eric sports flamboyant pattern-clashing pieces. However, they will be in for a tricky time as they move away from Moordale. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, whilst Eric is praying they won’t be losers again.

But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students – they thought they were progressive but this new college is another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being… kind?! It's not clear how popular mean girl and the leader of the school's Untouchables clique Ruby, played by Mimi Keene, will cope in the new surroundings.

Yet Otis' ex-girlfriend Ruby looks as glam as ever in the teaser pictures. Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. While Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A-Level. In the teaser, she is seen holding up the pair of jeans, which she was wearing when she was sexually assaulted on the bus to school.

In the new series, Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him. Despite a rocky relationship with his dad, it appears the two are able to put their differences aside and share a picnic. Over in the US, Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy.

Otis is pining after her, whilst adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus... His home life has changed drastically after season three revealed his mum Jean, played by Gillian Anderson, was pregnant. In the fresh pics, the baby is here and now he is no longer an only child.

Since premiering on Netflix in 2019, Sex Education has been nominated and won multiple awards, including the top prize for Best Comedy Series for season 3 at the 50th International Emmy Awards in 2022. Despite it being the final series, Sex Education's creator has teased we may see more from the likes of Otis, Maeve and Adam in the future.

"We are incredibly proud of Sex Education and feel indebted to our brilliant writers, cast and crew who put so much heart into making every episode. They have worked tirelessly to bring you the final series, and we can’t wait to share it with you," creator, lead writer and executive producer, Laurie Nunn said in a letter to fans when announcing the release date.

Speaking to Netflix's Tudum outlet, Sex Education's creator Laurie admits season four isn't necessarily the last we'll see of Moordale and all our favourite characters. "I’m definitely taking a break and thinking about other things. But Moordale is a really rich world, and writing about teenagers is always a lot of fun. So, I think that there’s always potential for more to be explored in that world."
