Liverpool's search for a new midfielder is narrowing, just a day after Fabinho completed his move to Al-Ittihad.

The Brazilian has followed Jordan Henderson in moving to the Saudi Pro League, with the two deals leaving a sizeable hole in Jurgen Klopp's squad. The German is desperate to bring in a replacement for the duo before the start of the Reds' Premier League campaign in less than a fortnight.

Southampton star Romeo Lavia is currently Klopp's top target, with Liverpool pushing hard to sign the former Manchester City wonderkid. Here, Mirror Football rounds up the latest Liverpool transfer news and rumours.

Fresh Lavia bid rejected

Liverpool have submitted an improved bid for Romeo Lavia, but it is still expected to be turned down by Southampton. Lavia has become the Reds' top target as they look to sign a new defensive midfielder to replace Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

The Saints have already rejected one bid for their star midfielder, who only joined last summer. But that has not deterred Liverpool, with multiple reports claiming they submitted a fresh £42m bid on Tuesday.

That offer is still expected to be rejected though, with Southampton demanding a £50m. Negotiations between the two clubs remain ongoing, with Lavia keen to move to Anfield this summer.

Klopp drops hint on back-up plan

Jurgen Klopp has hinted he may look to an in-house option to solve his midfield problems. The German has singled out Curtis Jones as a player who could be handed a new role if the Reds fail to sign a new midfielder before the end of the summer.

“I think it is no secret that we are still looking for players to join us. Curtis can absolutely play that position. Can he play it when nobody else is defending in the team? No chance. But then I don’t know any player that could play it then," Klopp said.

“A proven No. 6 is not available in the moment. If you see it as a positive challenge, try to find a way to be compact already or to find a way to deny the opponent. If you do that together, it’s always possible.”

PSG ready to listen to Mbappe offers

PSG are ready to listen to offers for Kylian Mbappe after he formally rejected the chance to extend his contract. Mbappe has been a long-term target of Liverpool's, with Mirror Football reporting on Sunday that the Reds were exploring a possible loan move.

The France captain only has one year remaining on his current deal, with PSG desperate to not allow him to leave for free next summer. According to Caught Offside, PSG will now listen to 'all offers' as they seek to bring in a fee.

The Ligue 1 champions are bracing for a bid from Real Madrid, who Mbappe is expected to join next summer. They will not sanction a cut-price deal, though a firm valuation has not been placed on the attacker's head.
